Last summer I replaced my UCA's, lower ball joints, shocks, sway links and bushings. Usually this cures a Ranger of all front end problems. Aligned, front end was tight but it hadn't been on the road in 6 months.
There was no play in the outer or inner tie rod ends I figured they had been replaced at one point.
When I started it up I had jack stands still under the lca's.The PS pump was whining and growling and when I turned the steering wheel I saw the tires shudder as they were turning.
Putting the tires on the ground where they had some resistance made the shuddering go away and after a half hour it stopped growling.
I got it aligned. It still had the stock tires on it and everything seemed well.
So I went ahead and put new rotors, calipers on it. Re checked the tie rod ends everything seemed ok.
Then I put those fat tires on.
When I hit a series of bumps the tires seem to push the steering around like the power steering isn't holding them in the right place. Almost seems dangerous.
Is it possible that the whole rack is worn to the point it can't handle large tires? Has anyone had to replace a rack and PS pump because of issues?
I don't want to pay for one and put it in if it is something silly like I should have replaced bushings in the lower arms. They look fine and I do have some stock new ones but would suck to do LCA bushings, pay for alignment THEN have to replace the rack and pay for alignment again.
This is on the 01 2wd. The 2000 4wd is as tight as can be and the tires are larger.. 31" BFG KO2's.
Thx-
