I have a '99 with the factory AM/FM/cassette.  I don't drive the truck much but I'd like to swap out the radio head unit to one with a CD player.  Anybody know what other Ford years/models easily fit that spot?  Maybe I can find a match in a junkyard?  I'm not looking to spend much, just sick of cassettes.  Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

A whole "gob" of Ford radios fit and plug right in, I just put a CD player from a 2000 Ranger in a 2001 Explorer, the Mach system on the expo had extra plugs (for the amp and sub) that had nowhere to go on the Ranger radio, but it still fed all 4 speakers and the tweeters just not the sub. Sounded just fine. I replaced it because the display was dead on the mach.

I'm pretty sure anything out of a Ford that is 2DIN and has those 4 holes for the removal tool will fit.

I have a radio from a F150 that worked just fine, same 4 holes.

I had a radio from a 97 expo that fit physically but the plugs were different.

I have a cassette model out of a 98 ranger that has the right plug, and one from a 99 expo (cassette and CD!) that has the same plug. So I'm thinking 98 forward was the same plug.

I would hit a junk yard with a set of Ford radio removal tools (real cheap, looks like 2 bent coat hangers) and see what you can find. Anything with the "Mach" logo on it will drive the stock speakers better, they had a slightly more powerful amplifier for the main speakers. The sub had an amp of its own.

At first i was gonna ask who still uses CD's but then.. he said "he's sick of cassettes"... and all of a sudden I felt 17 years younger

I bought a 99 with a cassette. I found a cassette in the center arm console (60-40 style) and it played. I think it was Kansas or Pink floyd or something. That used to be so cool to not have the large 8 tracks.

How old you feel now J? :)

I remember the Zeppelin4  8 track, I was so mad one of the jumps was in the middle of stairway. "Dear lady can you hear the wind blow...KERCHUNK...and if you don't know"

Personally, I am a huge vinyl fan and despite their actually being automotive record players before 4 track and 8 track.  I haven't used a CD or a DVD, let alone paid for one in 17-20 years.  with everything I have almost a 1/2 Terabyte of music and whatever I don't have, there is Pandora.

I just have to think with all the technology of today, who carries a case of CD's and or cassettes anymore.  I mean I'm admittedly old but I see value in an aftermarket head unit for our older trucks. They put out just enough more power to make the OE speakers sound better, you can often integrate your newer phone as a hands free option in a old truck.  Hell even my '93 broadcasts wifi and bluetooth options with what I've done.

With the newer vehicles having more integrations with, and I draw the line at 2020 yr vehicles, addition of cell phones, NAVI, and modern conveniences, there is a host of amazing integration modules that allow you to retain many if not all the OEM steering wheel controls or upgrade speakers and amplifiers without losing those function.. and that feeds my inner stock-nazi well.

I mean to each their own, i just don't understand lateral/regressive thoughts when claiming to upgrading something, let alone sourcing from a junkyard something electronic exposed to the open air elements and electronics, +20 years old with no known history.  Make it make sense

EDIT:  And I'm not really here to piss in anyone's Cheerios, I'm just another perspective or opinion based upon my own MANY-MANY experiences.
