OK maybe I missed a few pages of ford history, this is a SOHC in a 2000 expo what is the setup? Looks painfully stock.

It is, looks just like the intake on our 99 Sport 4.0 SOHC.

that is the 97-03 SOHC intake manifold after you remove the SOHC plastic engine cover
Fun fact the sohc intake actually has a power flap that changes the length of the intake runners for more torque

I hate the early 97-01 engines the intake must come off to change the timing tensioner, the intake plenum is two pieces and upper and a lower and all the O rings fail due to Ethenol........also it makes a wonderful home for rodents!!

All 97-02 explorer sohc engines, 01-04 ranger, and others look like this so yes you musta missed something, but don't fret, I don't want to own one of these either!!

Early 1996~2000 V6~4.0L~SOHC Engin has a 'VariableVolume" IntakeManifold, looks like a "Pretzel".

Factory MidYear 2001 & Later V6~4.0L~SOHC Engin has a redesigned simpler IntakeManifold.
Yep, you don't want to own an early 4.0L~SOHC Engin; way too many design+production problems.

Early 1996~2000 IntakeManifold, the "Pretzel"

Found another one. Ad claims it is a 99 and if it is, they must have put whatever 4.0 they had laying around in crates into production vehicles BECAUSE I bought a 99 for the 4.0 one time... it was a "OHV". I'm sure it was a 99 and I'm sure it was a OHV because Adam helped me dismantle it to put in a white 98 ranger.

The 4.0 OHV & the SOHC engines were both available in 99 IIRC. I remember when we were looking for our current 99 Explorer we saw some that had the OHV engine in them.
