So I'm working on a 2016 explorer for a friend who has spent hands full of money and has been to 3 shops now.

It has that 4 cyl ecoboost which seems sinful to put such a tiny engine in such a huge car but they did.

He has a mild intermittent miss that tosses a code sometimes minutes after reset. The "shops" have replaced a coil or 2, did the head gasket, and basically left him flat.

So I offered to look at it.

Plugged in the obd2 and started poking around with forscan.

Upstream O sensor, zero volts and never changes. Bank 2 in closed loop, bank 1 error.

My idea is to physically remove the O sensor and put a torch to it... but if it is a 4 wire can you still get voltage with a torch like the old ones or do you have to hook it up to 12V first?

If I put a torch to it and the voltage rises even 1MV then there is something amiss in the wiring between the sensor and the pcm, if it doesn't rise then the sensor itself is bad?

I have never touched an ecoboost.

check fuses?
So you are saying bank 1 sensor on live data shows flat and you are getting error code
Bank 2 sensor shows fluctuating voltage?
And the vehicle is in closed loop
Am I reading that correctly?
I would inspect wiring to 02 sensors make sure no burns or bad pins, no shorts
Of course check any fuses related to Hego
My mom owns a ecoboost 2019 platinum, I only change the oil and do brakes
Otherwise like you,  it would be all new

I Imagine swiping some sort of an electrical diagram would be a great place to start. I looked at a fuse diagram already and nothing says "I go right to the heater in that there O sensor".

I'll post a screen shot but from what the screen looked like bank 2 says closed loop and on the same explanation for bank 1 I was expecting "closed loop" but it says error. Bank 2 O sensor voltage fluctuates positive as it should and has a few MV but Bank 1 O sensor fluctuates between zero/slightly positive/slightly negative but never reaches 1/2 MV one way or another. It either like you said has pinched or broke wires or if I am lucky the sensor itself is dead.

So you say there are fuses related to the O sensors? Makes sense since it has a heater.

Yes! usually the hego's have a massive draw to pre heat, those circuits are usually protected in the smart junction box under the hood?
Although when I check fuse diagram for 16 sploder I do not see anything that says HEGO
Power may come from PCM or from one of the PCM power relays
Can you swap HEGO from bank 1 to 2 and then monitor live data? see  if error moves with sensor

If the lead is long enough good idea. I look at it monday evening.

OR if I know which 2 wires are the heater I can just check the voltage, assuming the pigtail is female on the harness side.
