I’m finally trying to start my build, and I think I found the perfect candidate. From the TWO fricken pictures he’s got, the body seems to be in decent shape, I’m not too worried worried about paint. My main thing is I don’t want it rusted to pieces, but again from the 2 pictures I can’t see any but it’s also hard to tell. The body looks straight though. He’s asking $600 for it, he dropped from $1,000 this week. I’m thinking either continue waiting or make an offer, but 600 seems pretty steep considering there’s no title, no keys, and it doesn’t run. I’m wondering what you guys think and how I should justify my offer. Here she is in her sleeping beauty

Here’s the ad he posted:

I’ve asked him for the vin at least, that way I can run it through the stolen vehicle database and another vin decoder website, and possibly the dmv site to see when it was last registered. He said he was out of town, my guess is he’s got some property with the truck on it and wants it gone. If y’all think it’s a waste of time, feel free to let me know. I really only need the body, the engine is going to be scrapped or sold to a junkyard for either a core for another motor or just for straight cash (probably $20 lol) along with the trans and axle.

Is that the long bed? Man... if you have to get it out of where it is...

Myself... I'd offer $300 and only if I wanted it really bad... what's the red and white one a ranger or bronco?

There was an 89 extended cab 4x4 with the 2.9L that had 60k original selling for $1500 at a dealership a few months back.

Are you shopping on FB market? I find better vehicles on cargurus, Edmunds.com, and cars.com. if you just want a body try copart.

I seem to be the one searching for cars for the family lately. I'll see what I can find in that body style in Texas. If I find anything I'll PM you the link.😉

Yes I believe it is the long bed. It’s exactly the body style I want, single cab long bed. It’s a TRUE first gen (from 1983-88). I’m on Craigslist, and working with basically a nonexistent budget lol (very, very small). If he’s firm on the 600 I may have to ask if he’ll hold it a few weeks. I’ve got a coworker who has a truck that can tow it, it’s 120 miles away from home. If it was closer I would, but I don’t think it’s a good idea letting Lola haul a load twice as heavy as she is for that long. I was also thinking 300, I may ask for 200 and “wiggle” to 3 idk. There’s a few people on here who know more the worth of these trucks. I’ve contacted some junkyards and the cheapest wants 400 For just the body and bed, no interior pieces no door panels nothing. At least this I would have a complete vehicle, maybe get a couple bucks from the pieces I don’t need. I don’t need it running or driving either.

no title Im under $500 for sure
Check wheel arches for rust, check under the doors on the inside lip for rust, check around battery tray and radiator support for rust, also the rear cab corners and around the firewall connections
Make sure its not stolen and haul that SOB home for $300

The only problem I see is getting it home. I’ve got a trailer with 4 flat tires big enough to haul it, but it hasn’t been registered in years. I can’t pull the truck with my Ranger, it’s wayyyyy too heavy. I can ask someone at work if they can, my coworker has a dodge 1500 with the 5.7, but idk if he has a trailer hitch. It’s a 120 mile one way trip to 240 round trip. If I get it for 300 then I’ll be pretty strapped for cash, and I’ve gotta rent a trailer. I’m thinkin I can talk to him, see if he will unlist it and wait about 3 weeks and then I won’t be worried about it because I’ll have 2 checks. If he does, that would be awesome. I’m not too worried about someone else buying it because to someone who may not know what they’re looking it, it looks like a pile of junk. My worry is that someone is going to get it before me, but idk. I may take the trip out there and see it in person and talk to him. I want it, bad.

I don't know about Texas but in Ohio there is a 9 step process to get a title for an abandoned vehicle and it is almost impossible.
I thought of looking at this one but I'm wanting anything but red interior:
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1176108282725172/
HOWEVER worth is in the eye of the beholder, I once paid 1200 for a 2WD ranger with a blown motor.
Personally obtaining a title is a trick, check the laws first. Looks like a 4 hour job to dig that one out to get a trailer on it.
I don't buy without a title. You might know someone. Go look at it and snap a pic of the VIN. Looks in OK shape, if it were in a barn and had a title I might give like 8 for it even if it didn't run. My purchases require a title I haven't made an exception since I bought that motorcycle without a title and a year later and 250 later still no title I gave it to someone. Traded a les paul studio for it another 450 lost.

What's the law in Texas about a 25+ year old vehicle and title?

Here in GA if it is over 20 years old all that is required is a bill of sale with the Vin on it. Anything I have purchased used I have had Vin check on it prior to buying. I found a hot Triumph Chopper for cheap that way - no, I did not buy it.

It’s nice, but I’m in Texas. The cost to transport would be way more than I’ve got. I’m aware that there’s probably tons of older rangers out there, but I’m looking in Texas in the Dallas area. This one is probably a no go now, I guess the first website I read made it seem much easier. Here, it’s nearly Impossible to get a title for it, just a surety bond. And even then the vehicle has to be inspected and it can’t be junk or salvaged. So, pretty much this is one is no longer on the list, unless somehow the owner finds it, if he even is the last registered owner.

you can apply for title for abandoned vehicles, it can be a pita but you can do a title search, and also in many cases apply for title if the vehicle is in your possession and no title is avail.
Sometimes in some states if the title is located you do have to track down the PO and get a signature....but in some places even without that you can get the title transferred to you...... check with Texas I bet its easier then you think

Well, what jamman had said kinda scares me a bit. I’m not in such a hurry anymore to get it, I may still it just depends on his story and how believable it it really. I’ll keep my eye out though

So, I’m at a crossroads. Since I’m ballin on a budget, I need to find a way to get one of the two trucks back. Now, Ford doesn’t list a tow rating for my truck, because I have the 2.3 and a 5 speed with 3.73 gears, yet I hauled those loads of stone no problem. Now, I believe the weight of the Ford Rangers are ~2,500lbs. I believe I could tow it with my truck if I used a tow dolly, since that’s the lightest trailer option I could rent. If I used my Ranger, I would need a trailer hitch, a ball, a longer chain, and a come along. Now, here’s the other part to the dilemma:
I just bought the 2002 Explorer. The tow rating is 7,000lbs, WAY over what the ranger/trailer combo weighs. Now, to use the Explorer I would just need a ball, a chain, and a come along-saving me $150 for the trailer hitch. The only problem is, the Explorers transmission is starting to slip from first to second...I don’t want to break anything. Would it be fine towing the Ranger, or should I use my truck or none of the above?

I would say no. The 4 banger is about 5 hp less than the 3.slo. The 5 speed tranny is not as good as an auto for towing.  I have towed a 2400 lb car on a car dolly and it was a hairy ride with the 3.0. auto tranny, and 3.73 rear.

You left out a critical piece of information. How far are you towing?

Save your personal vehicles and rent a truck and tow dolly. That's my recommendation.

I looked up the torque as well, the 3.0 has 180 and the 2.3 has 154....crap

It’s 2 hours. I would rent a truck, but i can barely afford the two options I currently have, much less paying for a truck by the mile and gas
