My latest dilemma... I have to chose my new Gauge Cluster Look !

To get it started and determine if this path is viable I need some info, thanks to anyone that add info to this thread.

I have a '95 XL Gauge Cluster, 2WD... and I want to put it in my '03 EDGE 4WD Dash.
I thought the only problem was going to be to find the 4WD Indicator Wiring and move it to new indicators where ever my 4WD Switch ends up but I have been told that the Cluster needs rewiring to work properly.

I am asking any of the Electrical Gurus out there in Ranger Land,  "Can the 2WD - '95 Cluster, Speed-O Only, work in a 4WD - '03 EDGE; and what rewiring is required" OR "Is there a Gauge Cluster that would work better but only has a Speed-O, no tach in the cluster" ?

Thanks / Ltr

You can make this work, basically some lights moved around and the 03 cluster gets way different signals for the water temp and oil pressure.
The 95 speedo is cable driven?

What I am thinking is use the parts and pieces from your 03 cluster on the back side of the 95 cluster to make the 95 cluster work in your 03 truck

The easy part is moving wires, like I am sure just about everything moved from the door ajar light to the CEL
Post up pics of both clusters and lets diagnose the changes needed.

In my 88 I still have the factory dashpot, the plastic part. The rest of it is 100% custom, I fitted it with 5" autometer gauges and moved all the lights, etc etc...... anything can be done a cluster is a pretty simple thing really.

So what you are saying is that there might be too many changes to make the '95 Speed-O Only Cluster usable ?

Is there such a thing as a Speed-O Only Cluster in 2001 - 2003 ?
That would eliminate MANY problems !

Thanks

Good question!
No, as far as I know all gen II Explorer/Ranger trucks had a tach
You can use any cluster layout from 95-2011, meaning the dashpot itself will fit your dash and all teh wires are there.
From there you will have to "build" a cluster, meaning if you like the way the 95 cluster looks then you can use most of the guts from your 2003 cluster on the back side of the 95 cluster so it talks correctly to the truck

Trying to put it as simple as I can

What are your goals here? Problems you are having? For me I wanted to go to a digital speedo and get rid of the cable, I also wanted a tach that would work properly with my OBDII V8 so this led me to the Autometer gauges in the stock spots. I had to create locations for my brights, check engine light, 4x4 indicators etc....

These days so many things are possible, I mean you can even use a Ipad and torquepro app to make a digital dash that reads all OBDII functions.
Tell us what your goals are and we can sort out how to get you there

This is from the other thread you said:
"Does anyone know of a Gauge Cluster, that will fit my 2003 Dash, and has the Speed-O centered and two smaller gauges on each side."

If that is your goal then you are looking at doing some custom work to that 95 cluster.....the desert guys have been ripping out the stock instrument cluster and replacing it with aftermarket stuff since the ranger came out in 1983. The only real "feedback" needed on your 2003 truck is the battery light, the ground wire for your alternator voltage regulator goes through that battery light. Many times the guys who remove the factory cluster are left wondering why their alternator wont charge....otherwise the truck does not need the cluster to run so the blank space left in your dash is like a blank canvas. You can use LED indicators for the turn signals, bright indicator, CEL, Door adjar, 4x4 hi and low, battery indicator, , brake indicator, check gauge light, etc etc. Fiberworkx, Mcneil racing etc make custom dashes that will fit your truck.
Many forum members are also into 3d printing these days, perhaps they/you can print up some of the plastic bits you need to fill the space.

I do NOT think you will find a clear plastic guard without the ODO reset button hole, that sucker is on all 95-2011 trucks also.

From the other thread you said:

"Ya we have more thane... this one was suppose to be for "Is there a Speed-O Only Gauge Cluster for an '03 !

I am finding nothing line.

First I would appreciate you doing this... !

Second, we should more it to a thread with a wiring thing going on, I will try and get a link to the other thread and you can respond to that one.
We can close this one or at least not respond to it 1

Third, My cluster does not have a Speed-O Connector, so I am not sure of what year I have, not sure what VSS is either !
Is there someway to know for sure what year this Cluster is from?

What you are sliding is the Side gauges on the older Cluster can be replaced with the gauges from my '03 Cluster ? OK, that does answer another question I had in another thread.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate it !"

Sorry! let me clarify:

I will find the info I have several wiring books downstairs, we can also purchase online and ask all of our friends. Just takes time.

We are looking for
1995 ranger instrument cluster wiring and
2003 ranger same diagram

VSS = Vehicle speed sensor
in 95+ there is not "Speedometer connection" anymore the cable went away in 94 and the speedo signal comes from a single wire

To find the year of your cluster post up some pictures, especially numbers any part numbers (there are a bunch on the black matt cover under the bezel)

This is one of those projects where if you have both clusters apart on the bench in front of you it will start to make sense.
I am often using like 2001 clusters in 96 trucks, and things like this (to update the look or so the ODO follows the drivetrain full custom builds). Every single one of these projects is different, Ford moved wire locations and changed wire colors mid year some times.
Getting the correct wiring schematics for both clusters is key.
We can usually fudge it if we can get close, like a 96 ranger and 2000 ranger...most pins stay put from 96-2011, most big changes were in 98 when it went full digital

Your project as of today:
Make map of wiring pin changes from 95 to 03
Create a 2003 cluster that talks to the truck that looks like the 95
I do not see a problem, these two trucks have the same dash and very similar clusters/wiring

410C,   Thanks.

The question is,  "Does the Gen II Cluster Housing have mounting points for the Speed-O only Layout" ?

I will be out in the Barn in a little while, I will look at the Cluster Housing and see what I can determine.

Also, I have no problem with putting my '03 Gauges in the older (?year) Housing, thank on that one !

Back to your post of above... !

My main goal is a Speed-O Only Cluster, one of my choices is to use aftermarket gauges from another project I have going, but I was thinking the wiring.

If I were to build a new custom cluster, can the OEM Wiring be used to wire the new gauges or is all new wiring and sending units needed.
I assume everything new is needed.  (I made a custom cluster for my '88 Ranger a while back, some of the wiring worked some I ran new)

I will look at both the older cluster housing I have and see if I can get the actual year.
I will get some pictures so we are on the same page; any shots of the housing, cluster you might need ?

What can I do to assist this endeavor ?

410C, thanks for offering the assist.

Thanks, I am not a Mechanic or Auto Electrican in any way, form, or other... when I have a problem I just start to work through it, so all of the items throw me at first them I ask questions or look things up, then I try to Get It Done !

I will get to the other things I mentioned and get this done.

410Custom,
I just got a posting in the other RF Site, RonD mentioned that the '99-' 00, Cluster will work as a Plug and Play... same thing, different faces, if this is true we may not need to go through the whole rewire thing.
Get back to me and I will make an offer on eBay for a '00 Cluster :

"https://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-99-2000-00-Ford-Ranger-Instrument-Speedometer-Gauge-Cluster-178k-Miles/233157557006?epid=1011140577&hash=item364945fb0e:g:FH8AAOSw8NlcgCCu"

Thanks again !

I have a 2000 explorer cluster, I have SEVERAL explorer clusters 96-01 if you need one, cheap! Should be similar to 03 Ranger
Don't buy anything on ebay yet until you sort this all out. $110! Holy crap I need to put some parts on ebay LOL
I can sell you a cluster for like $20+ ship?

What you want to do is totally possible
You can literally do some simple wiring so the alternator charges and the truck is happy, then remove your whole cluster replace it with bits and pieces of stock / aftermarket, etc
take your 03 speedometer head and needle and mount them to a piece of black plastic if you wish :) lol

You can remove your cluster and drive around, as long as you wire around the battery light the truck will run
You may get a warning chime since you are a 2003, it will chime because the Airbag and or ABS light bulbs are missing, but we can wire around that too

Yes you can keep your trucks wiring and update/replace the sensors to fit your needs
Example:
My 88 BII uses a 94 Explorer fuel gauge sender grafted to a 88 in tank float then uses the 1988 wiring harness in the dash I have an auto meter fuel gauge that works with a 94 explorer signal. Auto meter does not make a gauge that works with my 88 sender....of course. This is the kind of stuff we get into
Here is my dash, I used a old cookie sheet to mount my gauges, but a new 3d printed gauge bezel (similar to the factory 88 wood grain bit) will be in the works......
You can see if you look close I moved the brights indicator and added an Overdrive ON/OFF light to the tinted plastic "dashpot" in the middle of the gauges. the brights indicator used to be in the speedo. I cut the film from a factory explorer console and rubber cemented the bits to the 88 BII film so the bulb comes on it lights up OD off :). My OD on off button is inside the 96 Mustang floor shifter you see mounted on the floor

pretty neat aftermarket option

OK, let me step back and take a breathe... !

Is the 2000 explorer dash a Speed-O only and does it fit as a Plug and Play... without the extra work on both our parts ?

Also, Ya I agree $110 too much and I was thinking the same thing about today's prices, "I need to pull out all of my extras and sell, sell, sell" !

I will make an offer, and see where it goes but if it will save time and extra work, I'm thinking it might be worth $50-75 !

As to Custom Gauges, most digital stuff is too expensive for my taste, the Digital Gauges I now have are usable but I was afraid of the extra wiring, new sensors, and the time involved !

I have new overlays for the Speed-O Only setup, that is why Plug and Play sounded good, but I would have to look at the extra indicators and see what is on the replacement overlays, I am not sure if they were originally ordered for a '95 or not.
Looks like I have a lot of homework before anything goes down.

Once I get out to the Barn, I will check things out, make some notes, and take some pictures; then there will be a starting point.

When I started this "Dash Thing",  I was unaware of the differences in the Clusters based on different year when I purchased the Speed-O Only Cluster, stupid huh, but now I am a little more in the know on years... I think !
Let me get this together and get back to you on what is happening.

Let me know about your Clusters, send me a picture, let me know fitment please ?

Thanks man...

410customs wrote: In the other THREAD:
We can compare the 95 wiring to your 03 wiring no problem will see if I can find the schematics and then build a map of the changes

Regardless the speedometer in 95 used the VSS in the transfer case/tailhousing, your 03 the speedo signal comes from the rear axle/ abs computer, that is the biggest obstacle but easily overcome. You can simply use your 03 head and needle in the 95 cluster. Same goes for the rest of the gauges, you can likely unscrew most of your 03 stuff and screw it onto the 95 basically making a 95 looking cluster with 03 guts

Now we have two threads going on this LOL
My 88 BII cluster is built up of 1988,93,97 and autometer parts, I plan to 3d print a new bezel to make it look a little better where I added my double din head unit and dash mounted 2" gauges then it will be "done".
I love it, the factory clusters are so "meh" these days leave alot to be desired with all the new tech avail> the dakota digital stuff is so expensive, and looks like a 88 camaro dash when done. I like the idea of LED for all indicators and a Ipad mini to be the actual gauges

You mentioned that my Speed-O input comes from my Rear Axle... ABS Sensor, I had my sensor disconnected for four years and didn't even know it, the Speed-O worked ok !

The wiring was too a little to short for the Lift and the movement I needed in the suspension so it unplugged on its own, the Mechanic that did the work on it didn't say anything because it plugged in on the lift but as things stretched the wiring didn't.
I started to have a problem with the braking of the truck... rear wheels locking up, back end coming around on a hard stop... SOL was my approach and then Light Dawn on the old Brain... something has to be wrong with the rear ABS.   Checked it out and found the connector dangling !

So the Speed-O had to get its single somewhere else... where, not for me to say, and I couldn't even if I wanted to.

I checked out the link you posted, then went in deeper, all the digital stuff looks good but it is getting to look alike now and that is what I don't want, beside the Tachometer on the top of the Dash.

In my '88 Ranger STX, as I mentioned before, I used an aluminums panel, cut to size, and fitted with five Autometer Gauges, a Speed-O, and four smaller function gauges, I thought it looked good and at Truck Meets there was always someone saying it looks good.  This time around I started off wanting to do something simple and when I heard the '95 Cluster would work I found one... NOW... I'm as confused as I can be and as I said I will step back, get a little more info and get back to you.

Do you have any circa 2000 range of clusters with speed-o only ?  ( I think I asked that a few times already, sorry if it is a pita ) !

I will look I do not think I have any tach less gen II gauge clusters
My stepson might

I never knew they existed until this thread!
When you said speedo only my brain is broken, I think big blank space with just the factory speedometer
I have to also step back and think, oh when he says: "speedo only" he means a instrument cluster with no tach!!
Please forgive me
If you get deep into this and need tons of help we will start to take notes :), just know it is totally possible
With a Ranger it has been done.... and done again and some more

I took  a look at my Speed-O Only Cluster (with Side Gauges) and got some numbers that do not make sense.

There was only one tag, that seems to say that this cluster isn't a '95 but maybe a '99 and for a CA Vehicle.

The truck it came out of was already stripped, nose gone and I didn't look at the body tag, the JY Owner told me it was a '95 !

Do you have any way or know of a site, where I can determine by a part number what year this might actually be ?

If you have a way here are my findings:
------------------------------------
PN: 150 BASE MPH
XL 5F 10849-CA
 31 AUG 1998 24:45:03
PN-150 11,'99 CA

There is a Bar Code with a number under it:
2CHA 153 B06
------------------------------------

Funny, nowhere does it have any dates that would indicate a '95 Cluster.
I will look around the Web and see what I can determine.

Thanks for the help !

Talking with a Ranger Guru on another Ranger Site and looking on line I believe I have a '99-'00 Speed-O only Cluster. (This Cluster has the Speed-O in the center and the function gauges on each side, OEM Stuff).

Now to check out the wiring.
I now have on the computer the Schematics of the three years of Gauges I will be using  AND since I do not know for sure about the differences between all three, I will review all of them,   this will be a fix to determine what I need to rewire, and an increase in the old knowledge base.

Although posted in "What did you do to your Ranger Today", here is the Face of the new Cluster.

Different..., a little RED lettering, added the Ford and the SVT on the face of the Speed-O, seems to stand out !

Many THANKS to 410Custom on this Site and RonD from the other RF Site for the assist they have given.

Oh ya, I need to review the How-To on resetting the Odometer... fun stuff.

410customs,

here is the findings from another of the Ranger Sites.
He heard I was doing this Cluster thing... (?), and put in a few thoughts.
              ------------
"I only see one wire difference and you don't need to change it
Center connector pin 10.
In 1999 it was for Inertia switch reset(no power to fuel pump)
In 2003 same light was used for loose gas cap(EVAP system)"
              ------------
What do you think ?

I'm thinking Plug & Play is on the way.

Thanks

When checking the Schematics and after I was told the only change is Pin 10...; I the connections were the same, but the Reference Point Numbers were a little off, close but not the same. Thinking this is a generation to generation change.

Also found out there are three locations in this Cluster for additional Indicator Lights. Never thought of using in Cluster Indicator light but starts me thinking. Could take OEM Dash Socket and rewired for separate power, and to what ever components you want an indicator light on.

Now cleaning things up, and thinking using the '03 Motors in the '99/'00 Cluster; gotta look that up !

Here is picture of the LED lighting I've mounted so far, I thought I had a picture with all of the LEDs turned on and the Gauge Faces in place but I can't find it.

You can see in the picture there are 4-Cree LED Bulbs in six OEM Positions, and a Strip of RED Cree LEDs around the outside edge.
If I remember correctly, the picture I don't have did show a very even lighting of the new Gauge Faces.
All of the smaller indicator bulbs (11) will be replaced with Buggman LED Bulbs... waiting to hear !

On the lower right side, there are five indicator light bulb positions, two are used, the other three will take the OEM Twist Sockets.
Thinking three Accessory Indicators could be installed.  (Sent The Buggman a PM, asking what he has to get these three indicators inplace so I don't have to disassemble the Cluster after assembly).

Another step forward, looking at the rear panel of this cluster housing, it appears these must have been used in earlier Rangers, i.e. Mechanical Speed-O Hole.

wicked good news!
a 99 cluster is alot closer to the 03 cluster, this is good!
in fact 99 was all digital so the oil pressure and coolant gauges should work the same, if not you know you can use the components from your 03

I really like that new cluster layout!!
I like having a tachometer on my dash, but not everyone needs it and with the tech we have today you can always have a tach on your phone/tablet/scanner etc

I hope I didnt muddle this all up and confuse things, you have to remember when it comes to actual Ranger trucks I only know a little I have been building explorers for 20 years because I let my two stepsons have the ranger business. Now we all 3 kind of work together (they both got jobs at Polaris) so I am doing the rangers too. I love to learn! Thanks for posting this all up

Thx 410C,

I was thinking, but didn't know where to go to check it out, to use as much of the '03 Cluster Gauges as possible, especially the Gauge Motors.
I would not want to go through all of the work of changing over and find out things weren't as they should be !
I will try to find some info on interchanging the Gauge Motors, Ford is no help, they want the VIN of the Truck the parts came from and the existing VIN and info that does nothing to help me.  I would think you could look up a '99 Cluster and see if the Cluster or the parts in it are called out for an '03... NOT !

Anyhow, I will be looking around the web today, I need to down load the "Odometer Reset How-To" and figure out how to and what to use, when putting the Clear Face back on the Cluster, any thoughts ?
