Before I got my B4000 I had an 89 Cherokee XJ. I loved that thing, but it HATED me, and was a constant headache. So I sold it. Biggest mistake ever. I have regretted it since. Then When I started looking to replace it, values on these things has gone through the roof...

So after Months of searching, I found this- a 1989 jeep Wagoneer. I have big plans, most of which include just making it nice to drive, nice to be in, and nice to see. I do plan on taking it off road/camping, but it will be a while before it's ready (struggling just to work on it, as it is STILL over 110° every day through the end of the month.

wow look at that thing! Older Cherokee with the wood grain, it has been a while
Those dudes had the
Auto4" automatic and the quadra trac AWD setup....the ones without the AWD setup last much longer (t case wise)
They run the old 258 straight six and they are unibody construction which can cause some serious body flex off road (enough to not be able to close doors)
They use a dana 35 rear axle and a dana 30 front axle
That is about the extent of my cherokee knowledge :)

this is a cherokee, so it has the "select trac" which is an NP242 transfer case. My last XJ had a NP231, differences is that the 242 also has full time 4x4 (awd that can be street driven) and has a lower "4lo" gearing, whereas the 231 is only part time 4x4, and has a higher crawl gear ratio.
I don't plan on doing any crazy wheeling with it. My kids want to go camping more, and we've outgrown the ranger, so had to get something I could take the kids in (and give the wife a break).

What is it with Jeep's right now?

My next door neighbor has an early 90's Cherokee that is 95% restored. All it needs is paint. Rebuilt drivetrain with axle ratio upgrade, rebuilt tranny and engine. New interior, dash, gauges, seats with everything upgraded. He had a little help from some of the "hill-folk" he grew up with in the north GA mountains.

I also have a buddy that has a daughter who had a 94 Wrangler that spit a valve out of the side of the head at the begining of the summer. She gave it to her dad and he got a totaled 2010 4x4 Ram with a 5.7 Hemi that he is going to shoehorn into the Jeep. He picked up the totaled truck for about what a rebuilt Jeep 4 cylinder would cost. He has my engine stand and hoist right now.

SUV's of all kinds are HOT right now, old ones actually capable of doing some off road, towing etc. have SHOT up in value. I sold my old XJ 3 1/2 years ago for $5000 (a strong price at the time) and it would easily fetch $10k+ in today's market. so it makes it worth doing the work on one you already own/can get cheap and fix up since you won't lose much if any money on it. I could sell mine for more than what I paid for it, as it sits. But gonna do work on it, and enjoy it.

I put up a white board (Dry erase) in the shop. Writing on the glass is a great idea too!!!

It's like felt made out of fiberglass? it's REALLY miserable stuff. In later years they switched to a hard fiberglass version that I will try to find. it's in ROUGH shape as is. this is how it came out of the jeep:

This was try #1, i used the wrong glue and it fell down, so I had to re-glue it into place with a proper glue.

Thanks! Project is coming along slowly, have a lot to do still, and every step forward is often a step back. Went to replace the vacuum lines this weekend, and all the grommets had perished, so had to order those and wait. Base for the seats? have to figure that out and order parts and wait, etc.

I got them on Amazon, $330. They were the only tan colored seats I could find to match the interior. while not exact they are very similar in fit to the seats I bought from Corbeau, I ordered the seat base from them to go into the jeep. I'll have to drill some new holes, but

I wish, the seats that I have are a mess. the passenger side is electric, but is broken. and the driver's side is manual, but the Person who installed it used a cut off wheel to get it out of the vehicle they got it from, so is all chewed up, and both are riveted all together. I didn't feel like drilling out rivets, or sourcing other set mounts from another XJ, or mocking something up myself, so I went the lazy (and not cheap) way, and bought mounts from Corbeau. They already have mounts that are made to fit in the XJ, and the seats I got have a slightly wider bracket than that on my Corbeaus I have in my Speed, but the same depth, so All I have to do is make sure to line it up right, and drill some new holes. Maybe an hours worth of work, vs days. and it only cost me $200 for the pre made brackets, vs what ever some custom job locally made would. And with seats and brackets, I'm still have the cost of what a set of corbeau seats alone cost.

OK so question... I will need to buy at least tires for my XJ, since the ones that are on it are BALD, and too small anyways. I have several options as I have a 1998 Mazda B4000 (ford ranger), that has the exact same 5x4.5 bolt pattern. and I have put after market wheels, with Milestar M/T tires on it.

Option 1: leave the B4000 alone, and get Just new tires for the XJ on it's stock wheels.
Option 2: Get new wheels and tires for the XJ, and leave the B4000 alone.
Option 3: Steal the wheels and tires from the Truck and put them on the XJ, and get new wheels and tires for the Truck
Option 4: get new Tires for the truck (a less aggressive tire) and put the tires from the truck on the XJ factory wheels.

The reason I would possibly take the tires/wheels from the truck is they are very aggressive M/T tires, and the XJ will become my main off-roading vehicle, the truck doesn't need nearly as an aggressive as a tire, as it will be relegated to mainly what little daily driving I do, and mostly be used to haul stuff to the dump or home from home depot.

Option 2. Your truck looks good with those tires.

Get the tires the XJ needs. Stock take-off Jeep wheels are plentiful. Used oversize Jeep wheel/tires can easily be found on multiple parts web sights.

put the aggressive MT's on the truck you are going to wheel (the Jeep)
get some nice AT's for the B4000( soon to be 5000)

Thats the nice part about having several trucks that share parts! Can swap things around at will........

I think what I should do is put a more mild A/T on the truck for if/when I start having to commute to work with it. i used to have an Infiniti that was my commute car, but sold it, so truck will have to take up that banner, and M/T's suck in a 30 mile one way freeway commute. and move the M/Ts to the Jeep. I can still get good looking A/T tires.

Ok... So I got my seat brackets in. They fit the bolts in the floor board (yay!). but I thought the tops would be a bit wider like they were for my mazdaspeed protege's brackets (my fault for not asking), so all I would have to do is drill some holes for the new runners. BUT they are not, How would you go about attaching this bracket to the sliders on the chair?
