Dang. That would sure look nice and would fit the "gentleman's build" look in my opinion. I will definitely be following this to see what you come up with. I'm trying to do a classy interior as well. I call it rhinestone cowboy look. Lol

Let not lose sight of reality you guys, these are Ranger Trucks... !  LoL !

I do like the full length Console but a little too much for me.

I did like the one Bob did in his '03 FX4 with all of the electronics inlace too, that would add the final touch to a console like that.

I thought the Escape Unit would be good, a little narrower, almost looked like a bolt in !

Yes, the Edge SUV/Lincoln MKx console is massive and would not fit between the seats.  I'm not even sure the Escape console will fit between them.  Mike69 is going to get me some measurements from his Escape.

I saw that Mike was going to assist in the measuring, good go !

I just want to see how things work out.

Why was it again the Explorer Console won't work ?

The old Expo console I have would require a custom fabricated fiberglass top cover made to accommodate the shifter and trim bezel.  After some rather crude mock-up, I think it would, quite bluntly, look like  .  Hence, the search for a usable console that already has a floor shift.

I understand where you are coming from.

Instead of Fiberglass, what aobu aluminum, there is smooth fish and there is diamond plate, and then the smooth can be prepped in a number of ways and designs.

I use aluminum for a lot of stuff, I made a complete Dash for my '82 Scrambler, then added inserts for gauges and radio, on this Ranger I will be building a Panel for switches and USB/Data Connectors, it will be mounted under the HVAC Bezel.
It is very versatile material, easily cut and filed or ground to fit and aluminum will take paint, or an oxide finish very well; I like to take a belt sander to the surface and keep it grinding in the same direction creating a flow to the look of matted aluminum.

All kinds of things you can do, there is also S/S panels.I find a lot of pieces of aluminum at the local recycling center.

OK talking too much, but I would think about reworking what you have before considering moving and fitting a new console that only just fits.

Done !

mhoward,
Sorry but every time I see your handle, I think of Howard the Duck.
Do you have a picture of your existing interior ?
I want to what it looks like and there are a couple of different consoles.
Also, I have a company local, that will bend aluminum or Stainless Steel to fit a new top to almost anything, an overlay type of thing.

OK, so I wasn't done !

Michael, sorry it took a while but then weather here has been rainy for the past 4 days, anyway here are the measurements. They are the best I could get but they are close. The measurements for the top are within 1/4-1/2" since the top is slightly narrower then the console base so I added in a 1/4-1/2".
Console width between the seats - 8 1/2"
Console width where it meets the dash - 91/2"
Console height where it meets the dash - 113/4"
Console length at the floor - 40"
I hope that helps you out, if you need any other measurements just let me know.

@Mike: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!  You have no idea how much this helps!

LOL  I told you when you offered that there was no hurry as the weather here in So. Indiana has been complete crap as well.  Rain and flooding... then the temp dropped.  Was 10 degrees this morning when I left for work.  These measurements will allow me to determine whether the Escape console has any chance of fitting in the Ranger, so I won't have to go out to the Pick N Pull unless it is to pull one! :-)  Again, many, many thanks Mike!   :frd

Another good place to get measurements and details are used car lots. When I was determining whether the seats I wanted would fit, I searched up carguru.com and found the exact year and model and found one for sale near by. The dealership was very kind and let me sit in them and take my measurements

And you want a full length console that has more room for a Floor Shifter ?

Why was it again you don't want a shorty Console ?

Have you chosen a Shifter yet, to me I'm thinking out loud, I would find the Shifter I like, then try to determine which console would be the best.

Does the Explorer have a Console that has a Shifter built in ?

I was just out looking for a Floor Shift for ... IF I ever do a 5.0L Swap, the AOD Trans, there are a lot of them in almost any style I would want, so I'm thinking there has to be something out there that fits your style.   It turns out Lokar has a 23" tall  AOD Floor shifter with an LED selector display.

Did the Console come with Carbon Fiber ?
What are you doing with the front compartment ?

Okay.  LOOK at the console.  Do you see ANY way to make a floor shift look right in there?

I don't want a shorty console because I want a full length console.

I have chosen a shifter.  It is the 2008-2012 Ford Escape shifter.

The US Explorer never came with an automatic on the floor.  There was a UK model that did, but the console looked awful.

Yes, there *IS* one out there that fits my style.  It is the 2008-2012 Escape console, that also comes with the floor shift.

No, console did not come with carbon fiber.  I wrapped that myself.

I use the front compartment to hold sunglasses and Tic-Tacs.

Since I don't have it in front of me and I have never looked at one in the JY I used to sell Ranger Parts out of, I can't really say BUT, the compartment in front of the Cup Holders and some of the area in front of that, with the up-swing, a Shifter could be made to come up through that area and IF you used a remote mounted LED Display showing Shift positions it might work.
Attempting to mod that console, which looks good, and damaging it, would take away from the value so I understand not wanting to screw it up.

Can the Escape Shift Unit be mounted inside of the existing Console ?
How did the numbers match up from Mike ?

The top of that console is two pieces, which would make it more difficult to mod with fiberglass.  I have a one-piece console top (from a Sport) that I cut up to see how that would work.  I determined it would look like crap, so that is why we are moving on from the Expo console.

Yes, the Escape shifter (highly modified) will fit inside the Expo console, but just barely.

Based on the measurements Mike gave me, it appears the Escape console will fit between the seats.  May be a tight fit, but most consoles are jammed up against the seats anyway.

@Jim: That's actually a nifty idea!  I didn't know those existed, but I bet they are expensive.  Kind of eliminates that whole "floor shifter" concept, though...

Mods are just that... mods, modifications. Manufactures change things so often there is no guarantee that one console out of an 08 is even going to fit another 08 or the shifters won't have another hole, bracket or gusset that will have to be lopped off or ground down to fit in a console it was intended for in the same production year.
Just grab one and start hacking!

Actually, there ARE two different flavors in the 2008-2012 Escape/Mariner/Tribute.  One has the needed PRND21 and the other has PRNDL.  Based on pictures only, the top console piece has a smaller hole where the shift bezel sticks through.  So yes, differences!

I like that to bring the Ranger up to the latest technology, sort of reminds me of the old, old Chryslers and Dodges, push buttons on the side.

Is there a motor section on trans.

mhoward, sounds like you are set on the idea the Escape Console, good luck with that, it should look good.
Take your time and do it right the first time.
