I haven't seen my specific issue, so I thought I'd spark a new conversation. I have a 99 3.0 flex 4x4 with a 4r44e trans. I have had the truck for a few weeks, and bought it without knowing much history. I trailered it home as it was in "limp" mode when I went to look at it. Long story short, after installing an updated valve body, I have no first gear. Reverse works flawlessly. Smooth. I have to start in D2, but once rolling, I can select OD and the trans upshifts and downshifts great. But if I stop I have to drop down into D2 and repeat. Just no D1. Can't even put selector in D1? Everthing I can find says D1 and reverse use the same band? I have never worked on automatics, and the valve body job pushed my abilities! Any suggestions are appreciated! Don't be shy, any suggestions are better than what I have. Gosh, it shifts so good once rolling.....

Could be the low sprag in the rear of the transmission.

Explorer forum has some great threads about 4r44 and 5r55e issues but it appears to be down (since yesterday).

Ok, maybe a sprag in the rear of the transmission?  If you could, please expand upon that reply; i.e. what is a sprag, where is it, and can a rookie like me fix it or is this a job for a pro?  I thought it had to be something mechanical, because the trans works great after rolling.

Sprag is a one way clutch also called a torque diode. Imagine a bicycle. If you pedal you go, but if you stop pedaling you keep going but the pedals don't have to move. They act like a ratchet that is what a sprag does.

The low sprag only holds in 1st gear. All other gears it is overrunning (freewheeling).

So mechanically that is probably the most likely culprit. It is a known failure part.

The sprag is shown here at this point in the video (notice how much teardown is required to get to it, it's one of the last pieces to come out)

Fantastic!  I was having major electrical issues, ran most of those to conclusion.  But the inability of the trans to downshift to 1st was a puzzle for me.  Thanks for the education and information.  I guess I'll breakdown, install the new valve body in another transmission, and put that trans in my lil truck!  No way would I ever attempt that level of tear down! That's terrifying.  Thanks again;)
