OH geesh been a while since I updated this.
James has been working to get all the little stuff buttoned up on this truck, door handles, interior trim, etc. It is SOOOO GOOD he is feeling well enough to not have to be on pain killers and can spend time in the shop! So nice to see. His brother has also been a big help, coming over on weekends to help and supplying parts (he has a couple of donor sport tracs)
The Sport trac is almost ready to sell!
The best news is the immunotherapy is working! James visible tumors are shrinking!
He went in for his second treatment today. Treatments are 22 days apart for whatever reason, but its working!!!!!

You can beat this James!!!

I just want to remind everyone that James could still use financial help, especially during these crazy shelter at home times. Jamie has done a lot here to help the ranger family, let's help support his family in their time of need!!!

I say it all the time because it is true! You guys are awesome, thank you

James drove the sport trac yesterday hoooray! short test drive
reveals the speedometer odo cruise and OD on off button inop, as I suspected.
You see the 02+ sport trac uses the engines pcm to "buff" the vss signal, the truck uses that buffed signal to work the speedometer, odo, cruise control and ABS brakes
In the 5.0 Explorer the PCM is not part of the signal and performs no VSS calculations (buffering)

So there are two acceptable ways to fix this:
Wire in a Ranger GEM module from 99-01.5 4 bangers (Not gonna happen and Ill tell you why)
or
Use this little gem from dakota Digital
https://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=126/mode=prod/prd126.htm

We will be using the Dakota digital interface

If we were to try and use the ranger gem we might lose controls of the power rear windows and rear doors, things are a little different on a sport trac body then a ranger body and the GEM is kind of a "body computer"
I think you could wire up the ranger gem so it just performs the one VSS signal buffering "act" but finding that 99-01.5 gem, its wiring pigtails and all the wiring book info for that GEM can get costly and take lots of time..... Then I would still have to find a place to mount it and probably piggyback many of the GEM wires to include boththe sport trac gem and the ranger gem = no thanks.
So the dakota box is a far better solution, and its $81 on Summit.......
The sport trac runs and drives awesome!!! Soon it will be even better :)

Stay tuned!

Thanks man, me too I have a bunch of those
they do not do the needed calculations that the Sport trac is looking for unfortunately or I would just use the V8 donor gem module. Explorer gems never did the VSS signal buffering, its a sport trac / ranger thing......silly silly ford engineers!

James had another treatment yesterday, more good news his tumors are actually less then half of the size now! all of them are shrinking! This is the best news ever!!

also his dakota digital speedometer converter is here, we will get it wired in this week, that should complete the v8 conversion if all goes according to plan

Allright here we are June 2020! Spring is over, kids are graduating home school, the water is going back down (we had some minor spring flooding) and we are back in the shop finishing up this truck!
James cancer treatment is going very well! He is more active and gaining his weight back, so he has also been in the shop turning wrenches more, in fact we have also been building a new pad back here where James plans to build his own shop this summer!! Woooohoooo more shop space at the house.
Anywho we had some major progress on the sport trac in the last few days, the last major hurdle for this 02 trac 5.0 conversion was getting the speedometer to work, at the same time making the ABS, cruise control and 5.0 engine computer happy with the speed signal
We did this by wiring in the Dakota Digital SGI 100BT Speedometer calibrator and now we have it working.

The Dakota box gets mounted behind the stereo, near the GEM module. I chose this location because 3 of the 4 wires we need are available there
The Dakota speedo signal converter is used when doing a 02 Sport trac 5.0 (02+ Ranger will be similar) because in 2002 the old v6 PCM used to do the "buffering" of the speed sensor signal for the truck. We removed the v6 pcm.

WIRING IN A DAKOTA BOX:
The speedometer/speed signal goes like this in a 2002 sport trac
OSS (output shaft speed sensor in the transmission) feeds the V6 PCM a speed signal
The V6 PCM "buffers" the speed signal to adjust for tire size and sends the corrected signal to the trucks modules, GEM (for 4x4 shift), Cruise control, and instrument cluster
These modules use the same old 8000 ppm as most Ford speedometers want to see. PPM is pulses per mile

Since the 5.0 PCM is now in the truck and the v6 pcm went bye bye we needed to add a module that can do these calculations for us.
Otherwise the speedo, cruise, PCM and Gem modules would not be happy.

There is one other module in the truck that needs a speed sensor signal also, the ABS pump motor. IN 2002 the 4x4 ABS pump is still using the vss mounted in the rear axle. This is the only module on the truck that still uses the 8.8 mounted sensor.

From 2002+ the OSS in the transmission tail housing is the speed sensor for most of the truck

So lucky for us Dakota digital has been making speedometer signal "buffers" for some time. Now there are other options on the market, you can use a GPS enabled converter as well but it does require a GPS antenna. GPS is not always available, so we chose to use the dakota box.
Plus the new SGI 100bt is bluetooth! so you can change the speedometer settings on your phone or tablet...cool right?
This unit replaces the old SGI-5 which many people have tried to use before.

So how the heck do you wire one of these things in?
Well that was the challenge, I finally sorted it all out.

A few minutes of wiring was all that was needed after weeks of research and a few sleepless nights we now have a working speedo.
I had to purchase the 2002 Sport trac wiring book to figure this out and do a bunch of question searching online. Looking back it is all very simple really. Here is how we did it:

The Dakota box needs 4/5 wires:
It needs a speed sensor input (1), a speed sensor output (2), power (3) and a ground (4). The speed sensor ground wire is optional and found to not be needed (5).
So for me I wanted to use the VSS signal from the rear axle, because almost every truck I build has a 8.8 rear axle with a VSS mounted in it.
The VSS wires in a 2002 sport trac go from the rear axle sensor directly to the ABS Pump under the hood. The wires are pink/red (+) and light green/black (-)
WE TAP INTO the Pink/Red + wire (1) and run it into the cab and up behind the stereo next to the gem module. DO NOT CUT the wire as the ABS brakes still need this signal!!!!!!!!

This is the VSS feed and it goes to spot Speed signal input + on the dakota box

Next we need a VSS output, you can find this wire circuit 679 grey/black (2) at the Gem module pin 14 on connector C20001a
Ignition power (hot in start or run) is found at the GEM (3) as is a good ground (4)

So the wiring is the EASY part. Figuring out how to setup the Dakota box to do our buffering calculations is the hard part.
This took a little experimenting!! (driving back and forth on the driveway 4000 times trying different settings did not work)

Basically here is the secret everyone wants to know, you see there are SEVERAL threads online for how to use the VSS signal from a 8.8 into a hot rod, or 5.0 Ranger or Jeep or anything...and no real clear answers.
Not one thread where somebody came back and explained the wiring and how it was done and why. Well here it is!

I knew this going inL: Ford speedometers want to see or are calibrated to a 8000 ppm signal

So how do we get there? How many pulses per mile does a rear axle VSS sensor send?
That answer goes like this
Our sport trac has 29" tall tires. A 29" tire makes 720 revolutions per mile.
The speed sensor reads a tone ring mounted on the ring gear in the 8.8 axle, the tone ring has 108 teeth (I know I checked and counted) The ring gear turns once with every revolution of the tire

so 720 (tire revolutions per mile) x 108 (tone ring teeth) = 77760 pulses per mile generated to the ABS pump motor.

Now we need to turn 77760 PPM into 8000 ppm using the dakota box.
If you look at the dakota instructions seen here: https://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/sgi-100BT.pdf
Any signal over 32000 ppm is considered a HIGH signal
Any signal under 32000 is considered a LOW signal

So we need to setup the Dakota box to use a H - L setting (high signal converted to a low signal)
This is listed as "application 3" in the instructions.
With the dakota box we are able to take the HIGH input signal of 77,760 and calibrate it with a factor of .25 (25% of the signal) all the way up to 4.0 (400% of the signal).
You can enter any number from .025 up to 4.0 and change it while driving to dial in your speedometer to be accurate.

The dakota box will take your input signal and multiply it by your chosen CAL or calibration number and send the corrected output to the wire hooked up on terminal OUT1
We need a signal of 8000pmm to make our speedo happy.

If you multiply 77,760 by 25% or 0.25 (the lowest setting available) you can see it is still nowhere near 8000 (25% of 77,760 = 19440)
The dakota box gives you more options! Hooking the output wire up to terminal 1 and a CAL of 25% still results in over 19000ppm!

But Hooking it up to output wire 3 is 1/16 of that value, output wire 4 is 1/32 and output 5 would be 1/64 of the value (sent to output 1).
So now we have math to do, we are getting somewhere.
I know that 1/16 = 0.0625 converted from a fraction.

So lets take the VSS signal of 77,760 ppm and figure out how to make 1/16 of that number close to 8000
I found if we first multiply 77,760 by 1.65 and then take 1/16 of that we get close
77,760 x 1.65 = 128,304
1/16 of that is 128,304 x 0.0625 = 8019
YEAH!! Still Following me?

So the Dakota box is setup like this, First you know you need to use the High to Low conversion, so application 3. In the Dakota box you adjust the base setting to be H-L
Next you set your CAL value at 1.65
Finally using output wire 3 we will be using 1/16 or 0.0625 of the calculated value and sending that to our VSS wire

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!! Now we can drive around and actually dial in our speedometer using a simple GPS to check speed.

VSS signal of 77,760 PPM is input to Dakota box
The CAL value is set to 1.65
77,760 x 1.65 = 128,304
We need 1/16 of this value sent to the speedometer (1/16 of something is X 0.0625)
128,304 x 0.0625 = 8019

Test drive = Accurate speedo!!!

Confused yet? I was....for a few days, losing sleep, walking around all bitchy and pissy because I couldn't figure this out, this happens with me I live and breathe these trucks so until I sort this out I'm like a zombie nobody wants to be around. Well now I'm back to my chipper happy self because we WON THIS BATTLE
Now I will make a post that puts this into layman's terms

WIRING DAKOTA DIGITAL speedo calibrator into a 2002 Sport trac, Ranger, whatever you converted to a 5.0:

First up we need a VSS signal from the rear axle speed sensor. These wires can be found ONLY at the ABS pump on a 02 ST:
Pink/red is VSS +
Light green / black is VSS - (we do not even need this wire, but I did not know that yet)

So we TAP into these wires, LEAVE THEM CONNECTED TO THE ABS PUMP otherwise no more abs brakes for you

I only cut them so I could add heat shrink, all joints are soldered and the battery is disconnected!!!!

Run these wires into the cab through the firewall and up to behind the stereo where the GEM module resides.

The PINK/RED VSS signal + feed goes to the speed input terminal on the dakota box
The light green with black wire turns out, is not needed.

Now that we have a speed sensor signal in we need a corrected speed sensor signal out, This is the grey/black wire circuit 679 found on connector c2001a at the GEM

Seen here:

We SPLICE into this wire, do not cut it, the GEM module, PCM, Speed control servo, 4x4cm, overhead console and instrument cluster will all need to see this signal

I ran a short yellow wire to the grey/black and hooked it to terminal OUTPUT3 on the Dakota box

Now the dakota box needs a power and a ground, we want hot in start or run:

Again we TAP into the RD/YE wire for power, run that wire to the Dakota IGNITION+ terminal
Tap into the BK/W wire for ground, run that wire to the Dakota GROUND - terminal

Red is 12V+, purple/w is my ground,  Pink/red is the VSS + signal from the rear axle (abs pump), and the yellow wire is our output to grey/bk 679 at GEM

Red power wire gets TAPPED into here, to the Red/Y at the gem

and hard to see but our yellow wire is tapped into the grey/black feed at the Gem. Don't put your splice as close as I did

The wiring is DONE!!

Now you need to setup your Dakota box so it will work for us with application 3
referring to the instructions found here: https://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/sgi-100BT.pdf

Set the Dakota box to convert a high signal to a low signal (H-L) or application 3
Any signal over 32000 ppm is considered a HIGH signal (for us its 77,760ppm)
Any signal under 32000 is considered a LOW signal  (for us the target is 8000ppm)

Set the CAL value to 1.65

Using output 3 will send 1/16 of that value to the black/grey 679 vss+ signal to modules.

The math goes like this:

Tire revolutions per mile  x ring gear teeth = VSS generated signal to ABS pump
29" tire revolves 720 times in a mile
Our 8.8 ring gear has 108 teeth, so

720 x 108 = 77,760 pulses per mile (ppm)
being sent to the ABS motor from the rear axle VSS

77,760 needs to be factored up so that 1/16 of it is close to the target 8000ppm.  (1/16 of something is the same as saying multiply by 0.0625)
So

(77,760 x __________ )  x 0.0625 = 8000

77760 x 1.65 = 128,304

128,304 x 0.0625 = 8019 pretty dang close

That is how we get our CAL value of 1.65 and know we need to use output3 which is 1/16 of that value

You can adjust for your tire size rolling diameter!! Drive around with a gps and check your speed. You can ADD or SUBTRACT from the CAL value while you drive to fine tune your speed signal!

The SGI-100bt is bluetooth and with the Dakota app on your phone you can change these settings via bluetooth or using the buttons on the Dakota box.....

VERY HAPPY! Any questions? LMFAO

Some helpful info, this is for a 2002 sport trac, others will be similar:

You can wire this into ANY FORD and use ANY SPEED SENSOR for the signal, you can use a Talhousing mounted VSS, you can use a transmission mounted OSS, you can use a front wheel mounted speed sensor or like we did and use the VSS found in the 8.8 axle. You will have to figure out how many pulses per mile your speed sensor is sending out, then you can choose the correct input and outputs for the Dakota box.

NOT YET
Im working to get a few more final pics then we will make a sticky with this post

There are LOTS and LOTS of people out there looking for this info
Many 02+ Rangers/Sports/Sport tracs that went 5.0 looking for this solution
Anyone trying to put a 8.8 in their hot rod looking for this info (Jeepers) and plenty of mustang and early bronco guys too.... I found lots of questions and no real answers in my searches

Mike, you need to smack me around a little on finishing the article pages.
410 this deserves more than a sticky it needs to be a tutorial article. Mike was working with me on a structure for his 2 most popular articles, he sent me the html versions and I put it in F-R templates.
I have way too many projects now, finding work among them but this writeup here is huge as any and needs to be sealed in a time capsule.

I made a new thread just for the dakota digital topic :)  Right here:
Dakota Digital install

The Sport trac has been test driven several times in fact it now has license plates on it, James and his wife are thinking about keeping it!! The speedometer is perfect, within 1-2 mph of our GPS at all times. Also the speed on the dash matches the speed on the OBD2 scanner (so the dakota digital and the onboard trans sensors are reaching the same conclusion in real time)

In order to keep the ST they would have to sell either his beloved 97 explorer that I bought him 15 years ago and he converted to 5.0 or his wifes beloved 98 explorer that I also owned 15 years ago and sold to his brother, made its way over to James family...that truck is also 5.0 and 4406 t case....both trucks pretty highly modified and been in the family for many years...so this is a tough choice!!
James' wife works full time to support him and their daughter, so she deserves a nice ride....but she loves her ol 98!! It is even monstaliner green, has late model dark grey interior, all custom.....so we shall see how this plays out.

Spring and summer are busy busy times...however things are starting to slow down a bit and I am starting to work nights :) the sun is up until about 10pm here now in June.

There will be lots of truck stuff getting posted in the next few months............

Really well! In fact his doctor is calling him the miracle case.
James had another CAT scan this last Monday and the results are very good, any remaining "spots" they are calling them now instead of tumors, have "Shrunk significantly" which are like now two of our favorite words. James is part of a clinical trial, we found out there are 245 people in this trial nation wide, he is the only one in the PNW. James remains very active, basically working around here daily!

He has been daily driving the sport trac. Last month he installed all new O rings in the AC system and we vacuumed and charged it, so now the trac is running around with AC, in fact it is 100% functional now. The trac is still AWD for now, he has been talking about converting to true 4x4
