Hey all,

I'm transplanting a newer, lower mileage 97 4.0 OHV motor into my 93 XLT Supercab 4x4.

I noticed tonight when I pulled the original flywheel from the 97 motor that the rear main seal looks like its seen better days.

I want to replace it and need to know which route to take with it.

Are the Fel-Pro PTFE Rear Main Seals any good at all??

I see that there is a genuine Ford seal out there with a built in sleeve that I can install, but I'll need to buy a very high dollar installation tool to do the job correctly...not real crazy about going that route if the Fel-Pro is a decent alternative??

The crank doesnt appear to have any grooves or scratches in it as there's only around 123,000 miles on the motor so I'd like to think the sleeve isn't really necessary at this point?

I'm building this truck to be a reliable keeper, not just a beater so that's another thing to take into consideration too I suppose?

What do you all think?

fel Pro rear main is a good choice
The Ford unit with the sleeve is in case your crank is bitched up

Use the Fel Pro unit and you can add a little bit of anaerobic sealant around the surfaces that mate to the block. This type of sealant never hardens and works well for making up slight imperfections that would otherwise allow oil to seep

If it was my 97 engine going in I would also seriously consider doing some more gaskets, the oil pan, the oil filter mount O ring, the lower intake manifold, valve covers, exhaust manifolds and perhaps the timing cover/waterpump as well...

While the engine is out is the time to do these!

Fel Pro or Victor Reinz gaskets work VERY well on the OHV
Fel Pro spends ALOT of money and effort making sure their gaskets are as good or better then factory

I agree with what 410customs said. I just had the trans rebuilt in my 2000 Ranger 4x4 & while the repair shop had the trans out I told them to replace the rear main.

I'll always recommend EngineTech rear main seals. Double lip seals, with the offset lip, will cure almost ALL leaks. Has every single time I've used them. Even on crankshafts that had a groove wore into them. No repair sleeve needed.

Thanks Ill check into those suckers! The 5.0 with the cat converter right underneath the torque converter always develop a slight weep that turns into a drip later in life. Would be nice to have a fix that works for more then just a few months
