 I have a 98 ranger with front coil suspension. My question is can I put longer shocks with out having to replace the coil or use coil spacers

 That would depend on whether or not the "longer shocks" prevented the suspension from moving withing it's normal design range of movement (ie, shock itself bottoms or tops out).

Why are you trying to do this ?

If you are try to get more wheel travel this is the wrong way to do it !

 No, not really.  With a longer shock, you risk over compressing it when the suspension cycles. 

Why are you looking to go with a longer shock?

 MrX, a longer shock will not have full compression/rebound travel. If you are trying to raise your truck you will need longer springs and shocks; but you are going to need an inner spring compressor to get the spring to fit into the control arm.

Coil spacers would be easier. It is a PIA to install stock springs as they are a very tight fit unless you have one of those special spring compressors.

Not entirely true based upon application and type/brand. i.g. TTB/TIB front suspension with coil leveling kits. 2" can use stock shocks. There is no increase of travel. Daystar is very clear bout this as is a few other companies.

Another example numerous manufactures from the likes of Bilstien, Fox, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, SACHS, RADFLO, and a few others have various shocks for applications ranging from mostly 0.00" -3.00" MAX in some cases and are recommended from stock to 3" of lift in some vehicles indicating that compression and rebound strokes are different ranges in which you think the shock for a 3" lift would be too long for a stock suspension and vice versa. There is some leeway in some cases. 

Properly measuring full compression and droop in all four corners as if you were corner-weighting the truck would be best in matching shocks for the OP with those measurements being key in getting the most of your dollar if you will. Otherwise, throwing randomness could cause some longer but short term damage and or not allow you to get the most out of the suspension itself.

I am curious as to what the OP was fully interested in doing as (S)He seemed to leave out some pertinent information for anything short of presumptions.
