Okay so here's what I'm working on! The new headlights and such have been removed
The fenders and bed are coming off

With the bed off I am able to work more easily on the rear, fitting the hitch and bumper with the inverted shackle setup will take some fabrication.

Shorter shackles are being installed, this will help clear the factory height bed (without having to cut into the bed supports)
This will give the rear 1/2” of lift
Next I am installing 1.5” lift blocks in the rear. I am stacking 1.5” blocks w the factory block for now. The rear needs 2” of additional lift. I knew she was sitting a little low, this was expected. The u bolts were Left long for this purpose
The front suspension will easily be adjusted to level the truck and clear tires
Tire coverage is also being addressed

King bump stops and cans being fit to the front, making a striker plate for the lower control arm where the contact is made. I am having some help with the bump stop setup and setting the limit straps, I have been working this summer with some other shops and one of my new good friends is a suspension expert who builds complete buggies. So I asked for his help! I want to maximize this suspension best we can

New Taylor wires finally fit
Complex security system being installed
Toyo tires now live on the method wheels
Front and rear cameras going on along with calibrating the birdseye camera system.
Two tailpipes being made to finish off the exhaust, I know where I want them to live and how the exit will be shaped/placed. Exit will be behind the pass tire the pipes will stick together like a shotgun barrel

A few other surprises along the way and then we will finally be testing/triubleshooting and then my buddy can finally get his truck back!

I have a photo shoot and testing sessions setup for this baby when she's ready at a private off road park. This is all very exciting this truck is the pinnacle of what I have learned about ranger based vehicles over the last 25+ years

We had our 4 year anniversary with this truck in the shop. That is ridiculous! Covid or not she's almost done with this stage of the build! Plan is to bring her back each summer for mods upgrades as needed

Finally! The fiberglass has shipped

Been waiting for 9+ weeks for fiberglass bedsides and now they have shipped should be here middle of next week!

Secret is out this truck is getting full glass
McNeil 3” front fenders and matching rear bed sides
This will help with tire coverage and protecting our nice paint job

Have not gotten done as much as I wanted in the last two weeks but that is all about to change. I will be ready for install when the glass gets here!!!

Tires are mounted on wheels and were

Bolted to the truck just in time to be removed for more fabrication and mods. We already checked clearances with the old wheels the methods are the same physical size and backspacing.

I have a few ranger beds here, the beautiful blue one without a scratch, custom paint, and. Perfect linex and then I have a couple of other ranger beds that could be used. It is a toss up. Either I hack into the blue beauty and fit the glass to it or I cut up a donor bed and then have to do more
Blue paint and high end line x. I will make that final decision next week when the glass gets here. I also now have a contact down south with a linex account (they linex all their trucks in Spokane)

Stay tuned! I'm trying like heck to get this sucker completed

Fiberglass has arrived! Thank goodness

So I open the box to get a look and I see Louvers. Why do I see louvers?
We did not order fenders or bedsides with louvers, in fact I discussed their new 4” louvered fenders w Eddiemoney and he does not like them. So we ordered smooth front fenders and bedsides. Now they get here and the bedsides have louvres? This is not even a product you can purchase from their website????

Why me!!?!?!???

So if you go to mcneilracing and check out ranger fiberglass nowhere in the catalog is a set of 4” bedsides with flat tops and louvers only the trophy truck sides with a huge bump on the bed rail (not flat like ours) are offered with louvered section.

I have no idea why they did this and I am not happy about it
Cannot afford to wait another 6-9 weeks to have another set made, bedsides are $400 shipping was $400

Why would they do this!?!???!
Trying to fill these in over the gel coat is possible but it creates a heck of a lot more work.
I'm hoping Eddie is okay with them and we can just run it!? Will contact McNeil today and see what gives.

Also after much debate and discussion I will be chopping up a black ranger bed I have and not the blue one.

Not the update we were hoping for
I cannot begin to express my frustration here. This happens way too often

Battle on

Left voicemail, left email with pictures and even tried online chat with nobody in other end I'm hoping to hear back from them soon

We do not want the louvers

McNeil responded:

“Well, we dropped the ball on this one. The pictures on our site are old & need to be updated. The louvers are part of our mold and all of these 4" bedsides come this way.”

So it looks like we are stuck with them as long as we want McNeil 4” bedsides

I am going to start hacking up the donor bed regardless and already began fitting the front.

Front glass has been fit

McNeil front fenders fit really well!

Truck was somewhat dusted/washed, fender substructure suspension included

In prep for fitting Front glass

Hood was aligned, fenders put up in place for first test fit

Preliminary results are good!!

Start marking and drilling holes carefully
Fenders are clamped, lined up to hood and door, marked, drilled small, checked, drilled again, fit, adjusted/ shimmed, final fit and then finally bolted down

The fit was very very good, best fiberglass I have worked with. McNeil, they really have the ranger down.

Good finish will only need minor prep for paint

We have 3 shops running right now, it's been a crazy adventure moving up here, I have been plugged into a group of dudes who live breathe trucks and off roading. The connections I have made will last for generations I hope. Anyways I've been busy! I wrapped up all other projects so I can focus on this truck until completion. I have probably said that about 22 times in this thread but life happens and we are building a future here. Also my income was cut in half last year, I am part owner of the elevator consulting business so we get paid for using our name, however actually drawing and designing elevators, being a project manager I only do a few hours a month anymore. Thank goodness!! I cannot sit at a desk and draw elevators for 40-60 hours a week like I used to, it take a toll on you. Anyways I have had to find ways to make more money then I spend, so I have been building a lot of trucks and making a lot of repairs for others.

So all that has settled and is sorted out. I have a team of close friends working together now on these trucks. The result is 3 separate shop locations and a ton of projects. The nice part is we are flipping rangers and I am not even there! Everyone knows I have to focus on the 07, it has been in the works for some time

Okay enough with the boring business business side of things let's get this truck done
We have a body shop all setup and we have been doing g lots of body work and paint. My buddy has been painting cars for over 50 years and my other buddy/neighbor/ helper is a body shop master tech so. We had setup heat and air and all things needed for this. The dudes are all practiced up (painted about 4 white rangers and a white sport trac, and a 49 Chevy pickup this summer)
Now they are all setup and prepped to spray some blue

My job was to get the fiberglass bits fitted and prepped for paint. That is done and the parts are off to the body shop now
The “louvered”'sections of the rear bedsides are being professionally patched/covered we don't want the louveres

So here we go many things have been accomplished here let's get you guys up to speed

First up we needed a donor ranger bed. Do I cut up the nice blue one?

Pros: less bodywork, this bed is flawless no dents and it's already blue.

Cons: it's a perfect 07 bed with high end linex . Cutting into it would be a shame! But it would have saved me/us some workwell lots of work.. but it would have also created other problems like cutting through linex and perfect paint, and leaving linex exposed at the cuts not optimum, edges and part of box would Likely still need paint when all is said and done etc etc.

eventually it was decided no way am I cutting up the 07 bed. I was back and forth on this until the time came to actually modify

In comes the donor bed. I have a black bed from a 2002 ranger we put back on the road. We scored a “less” dented bed from the junk yard to use on that truck red and we have to paint that truck anyways so

This Black bed had a huge dent in the side, otherwise very good shape perfect donor

Getting my hands on a good ranger bed is not easy, they are valuable around here. It looks like this one was destined to be ours for this truck so we make it so

Once decided the bed was brought into the shop so it could thaw, get stripped and cleaned up, then finally cut for fiberglass

The 07 bed has been put in storage lol

Turns out picnic tables are perfect for holding ranger beds

I am able to easily move these with the forks on my tractor, I've gotten quite good at it!

The black bed sat outside for 4 months before finally coming in had to melt the ice and remove all forest debris

Really good shape! On this side

Huge dent over here

The box is still straight as an arrow

Dent city

Time to clean it and strip all 02 hardware. Of course one fastener had to strip

Grinder made short work

The box is straight!

Couple of dents and some metal repairs to be made, these would be the only “cons”

Of using this bed vs the blue one. It needs some fixing to be perfect for the new linex and some Blue paint

I scraped all the goop out and did an initial clean and wipe, I was very happy with the results this bed will work great, better than expected.

Couple of dents

Metal will be straightened

Lucky for me I have the best metal body paint dudes around on my team!

This is the only real rust spot on this bed, it has already been cleaned and treated with rust oleum rust treatment that stuff is amazing! More on that later

It was time to plan our initial cuts, the goal is to leave the bed sun structure in tact and only remove the bedside without the tedious drilling of all the spot welds. Plus doing it the way I am, leaves much structure behind which makes the new glass bits and the remaining metal box much stronger the. If we had cut all the spots welds.

As Mentioned before glass bedsides going onto a ranger has been a thing since 1983, so no need to reinvent the wheel

Cuts were made freehand with my 220v plasma torch. I used a magnet and straightedge just like I was taught in art school. The plasma is just like a pencil

Did I mention not only did we get a 1940s Quincy air compressor and set it all up we also scored a used Alladin diesel 220v Hotsy for $500 and got it running. The Hotsy is soo good at stripping all these parts in prep for paint

Only pic I have of the Hotsy? Our buddy Earl getting ready to clean his old skid steer we fixed an huge hydraulic leakEarl is 78 and works harder than any 20 something I have ever met. They make 'em tough up here in north Idaho that is for sure

Bolted a strip magnet to the straight edge

First initial cuts

Don't forget the inner support structure in the wheel well and under the tail light

Departure angle is greatly increased w the glass bedsides, the result is much of the factory structure gets hacked away

I cut large and then refine
Eventually ending with factory edges similar to cutting the bedsides off via the spot welds.
A combo of plasma, grinder and sawzall was used here

First cuts, this will get trimmed a great deal

Must leave enough structure for tailgate hinges, but not much more

Bedside was test fit a few times and then more refined cuts and trimming

Inner structure tucks into glass

Getting there, once completed this factory metal bedside support will fit be wrapped by the glass material is removed from the tail light section until it reaches

More cuts / refinements

Better! Rough cuts and initial fitment almost complete

Really close now!

I cannot imagine doing this to that beautiful blue bed

Almost fit

Remove side one more time make final rough cuts. Edges starting to smooth
And finally

Factory metal tucked perfectly

Small amount of trimming still needed here

Bedside finally wraps factory support structure

From underneath

Glass departure vs factory

Boom!

Take what we learned and use it to fit the pass side

I enjoy working with these aftermarket panels when they fit properly like these do

Fiberglass likes to be sandwiched but not pinched too hard. Many fiberglass panels should be attached with a rubber or plastic bushings and the bushing gets bolted to the vehicle (or metal tabs)

I have an assortment of autofab urethane fiberglass panel Mounting pucks, stainless hardware, and weld on tabs. However I did not need them for this project, instead the ranger glass gets installed “smooth” with no visible fasteners

Those are how I mounted the bedsides on my bronco ii
Very good product, it protects the fiberglass from cracking around your Bolt or washer by acting as a buffer and also increasing the size of the mounting hole

Time to do the other side. I used a scribe mostly to transfer the same pattern from drivers to passenger side

Time to cut

Note to self next time put the tape on the side that gets cut off
Was a pain to peel off after I melted it

Don't forget a good solid ground

Much of the pattern is cut freehand. I use one hand to steady the other

Boom! Perfect bedside cut
To get through all this lower support I finish up with grinder / sawzall

Blue paint is going on!

My elevator
Career is coming to an end, my last paycheck will be end of January. I have a paystub from 1987 showing I have been working on elevators since I was 14 years old. Full time employment since 1996 when I was 5 years out of high school. 28 years doing elevators, steady paycheck. I knew this day was coming as I have been working with my father since 2005 and now he is retiring at 82. Soooo this means I can finally do trucks full time without being pulled away for elevator work. It also means no more steady income!
Time to hustle

Blue ranger is down to the end, I have a checklist of things to complete.
Everything I have done in the last 10 years has been leading up to this moment
Time to finally chase my big dream!

Small update here while I have a minute

The fiberglass bits have been fitted to the truck and to the new bed. The new bed has been chopped up to accept the bedsides.
The bedsides have those unsightly louvered sections. Much debate about how to handle them turned into just needing some good body work supplies and some know how. My buddy has been doing bodywork for 50
Years and my helpe/buddy ( neighbor from Colorado who also moved here) worked in body paint shop back on colorado for many years. These guys are good!

So the glass parts and bed have been shipped to our in town shop. The in town shop has been setup for this body and paint work. 1940 Quincy 120 gallon 5hp 220v compressor with plumbing, shop heater, exhaust fan and more all installed.

So let's begin with the bedsides and the louvers

First up several trips to the Spokane area have been made getting setup with a good
Body and paint shop. We found the right guys, very knowledgeable, good products, good prices and good people.

We needed some Fiberglass resin for this and some Body filler. I have some in the shop of course but it's possibly 10-15 years old! So instead of trusting it I stopped and got some good stuff from the parts store. While it is good stuff, it is not good enough for these dudes. They have better stuff in mind! So I returned my goodsin favor of the high end stuff they bought. Live and learn lol

Apparently bondo gold professional is not as good as this stuff, turns out they were right! And don't show up with resin jelly when they want resin lol. So the small cans back to the parts store

So anyways the louvered sections were

Cleaned and sanded around the area, then glass Matt and resin was applied and cured. Next some more Glass Matt (brown) was laid down, sanded flush, fiberglass filler (green) and then a skim coat of professional filler (gold)

Next is some spot filler and glazing putty followed by some super sick spray filler primer for any imperfections. The parts were then Prepped with bull dog adhesion promontory put into primer and finally the blue!!

When I took delivery of the truck Eddiemoney left us with a half quart of leftover paint from his truck (the blue paint job is it very old) we used this paint to
Match up the new stuff. The paint he left me with is not only 4+ years old but it has been thinned already so we could not use it. However it was perfect to have for matching the new paint.

Next the front fenders and some of the metal parts of the new bed

While this is happening over at the in town shop the exhaust tail pipes are being fabricated and the alarm was being installed. The security system is quite complex on this truck, one of the trickiest parts of the build, details of this will not be shared. But I can tell you there is more wiring and modules in this alarm then the Apollo moon lander

Many updates coming as this truck has our full attention. For the next month until
It is done, tested and then finally delivered!!!

The louveres are in front of the tires (lame) if they were to the rear behind the tires we would have explored putting the exhaust through that area and making some nice metal flanges. McNeil did not update their website with current pics. All of their bedsides now have the louvered section personally I think it should be an option, obviously not everyone likes them

Happy fathers day to all the fathers. Back with another update

So we are finally putting down he paint! We ran into a snag. First off it's 100% humidity here for like weeks now.. huge snow then warm weather we have heavy fog every day (we live near a 45 mile long lake) and it's been raining on and off for weeks. Very humid! The ol Quincy compressor was putting too much water in the lines and when spraying the first set of primer we got some fisheyes

So upgrades for the compressor
Came sooner rather than later. The paint must be perfect on this truck!

Added some galvanized metal air lines with water traps and a slope to trap the water. Added a second dryer to the line

Repairs to the McNeil glass are done (small imperfections typical with fiberglass) the louvered sections are now gone and we are ready to primer the fenders bedsides and the bed parts. If we could get a few days without rain that would be *****in! Someday I would Love to have a real paint booth

Bye bye cosmetic louvered sections

If you look closely you can see small fisheye in primer section

Blue paint is happening! I know I said this before but we had some delays
The fiberglass needed lots of prep some hairline cracks some imperfections and of course covering up the louver sections

Here are some pics from fitting the drivers fender
The shop was cleaned up after a short winter it was time to remove all the shop “Fluff” this way the blue truck is front and centered and in focus

First up there is a little fiberglass
Bump that needs to be removed for the glass to fit

Multi tool makes short work of that

The first hole to drill behind the headlight has us lining up the header panel to fender body line

Had to find all the blue bolts lol

Any and all surface rust is treated

Fiberglass lined up perfectly, holes marked drilled and test fitted

Fender was removed and shipped via backseat of the v8 trac to the in town shop for paint prep this is where the magic happened

Almost in paint
These fiberglass bits need a lot of prep
For paint, the mold release and gel coat are really being a pita. Also Lots Of cracks and chipping. McNeil glass may fit good but these front fenders sure are thin!

We had to reinforce a few sections
Lots and lots of prep

Finally put them in full primer/sealer just to find More issues. My guys are on it! I am not worried. It will be as good as it can possibly get. Meanwhile I'm back at the river shop finishing the rest of the build
Stay tuned! 5 day weekend coming up for us I will Make huge progress over the next 5 days

Fenders are primed successfully
We are building a small paint booth area for the color and clear, basically just a stick wall with some plastic and filters color this weekend

Thanks for the likes, I appreciate them!!

Well we were actually talking to a local auto body place about renting their booth at least for spraying the clear but then he got really busy and could not let us. Something about winter driving conditions and collisions lol lol we don't want to rely on others or transfer that kind of liability so it's best to create our own clean space, as I said my buddy rich has been doing body work for 50 years and he is mr outgoing he knows everyone in this town including several auto body places. So he was all excited to be working this deal where we could rent the booth for a few hours.. he gets very passionate about this stuff hahaha

Luckily we have the room! I just had to find a place for a b2 and my 52 Tudor can roll back and forth. For putting down the clear you really need proper ventilation and temperature control. Tons of light and the white paint sure helps with that!
The compressor setup is working really well now, just like everything else we drag home on a budget it needed some love (throw $$$ at it)

This space is perfect we framed a simple wall that can be put up or set aside for when we need the clean space

I knew quite a bit about auto body before this but now I have learned a ton more. I am lucky my dudes are pros at so many things!!!

I'm back at the home shop working on the rest of the truck stay tuned this is the final push.

Allright finally!!
As you guys know the clean space paint area has been prepared and ready for the fenders for a while. However the weather did not cooperate. Until yesterday! Finally above 50 outside and not 110% humidity

So the glass finally got some color!

The parts had been in primer for some time
Yesterday (my 51st b day) my friends came over and got the paint done

First up was heavy primer sealer
Then wetsand w 600
Then the urethane seal coat
Then adhesion promoter
Then pigment was
Laid down, and finally clear coat!

There is more to it than that but these are the steps I caught throughout the day. The metallic blue looks amazing, the parts really came out. There was a ton of prep work with all the fiberglass that was done to hide the cracks and fill in the louvered sections

My dudes really know their stuff (75 years of paint experience between the two of them)

The final blue that was laid down is actually paint that was left with me 4+ years ago when the truck was delivered to the shop. This is paint left over from the trucks paint job, this worked out excellent as it should be damn close to a perfect match.

The parts will now be dried as the “solvent pops” and then we can do a “cut and buff” of the clear coat. Late this week they will make it back to the other shop and get mounted to the truck. Then the whole truck will be polished

Next step is to bring in the prepared bed and get some color on it. The underside of the bedsides and the backsides of all the
Glass will get sprayed with some decent spray on bedliner to help protect the fiberglass and hide the ugly metal

Parts in primer patiently waiting for warm temps

Paint space got a second coat of brite white and several led light

Parts in heavy sealer primer for final wet sand. You can see the plastic pull in, with the fan on venting the space there is plenty of suction pulling the fresh warm air through the filters
