Thanks. Tires are temporary, I think I'll keep the rims.

Got the bluetooth 2din in along with an amp I have had for ages. Didn't want to post till I got it working LOL just pulled it a few minutes ago after it sounding like turd for 3 days, humming, buzzing no volume.

Turns out the little white handle dip switches don't go toward the white portion of the diagram, the black on the diagram is where you put the white. Seems stupid to me but it works great now.

So basically I had all the HPF's on and speaker input when I'm using RCA. Every switch was wrong.

My clue was a little "on" at the top left of actual switch.

The drive home is going to be interesting.

Pic, not showing pods. I'm re doing them since I'm evidently not as talented as buggman, they worked fine at 12v on the bench. Feed them with almost 14 and they dance like crazy.

Well not a professional job, I used one of those 15 dollar kits and had to mod the crap out of the bezel but it turned out cool. Third one I have done, things are starting to repeat lol.

I realize I am seriously late to this party, but just read through the entire thread (on work time, LOL). Gotta say, I love what you are doing to the truck and how it is turning out. Nice night pic of the dash lighting, which reminds me of a post where you (Jim) said your favorite color dash lights was green. Personally, I like the blue better than the green; looks awesome! Now, about that 5.0 swap...

Better late than never! Thanks Mike. On the green, I do like green better but I already did green and I had all this blue stuff laying around from that 97 mountaineer decided to use it.

I am seriously out of money this year for anything major and my extended cab is taking a crap (1 cylinder miss and water disappearing) so I have to just drive it for a few months. Need to fix the ex cab my 15 year old is going to be driving here in a few months.

Jim, you are definately not alone there. Your extd cab Ranger with the miss & loosing water is that the 4.0 OHV you were talking about in another post?. It sure sounds to me like it has a cracked head. did you ever pull the spark plug from the cylinder that has the miss? The cylinder that I had the problem with was the drivers side front. Replace the spark plug & see how long it runs good before it fouls out again.

I'm back on this project, repairs this time but freshening a bunch of stuff up.

The knuckles are off the front at work, going to sand blast them and paint them black so they will be black and painted up until the first 10 miles I drive it, then the paint will flake off and it will look like crap again.

I know now why I had premature bearing failure (noise) on the extended cab I did a few years back. It wasn't as much the Detroit Axle bearings as the fact I had no idea there was an "excluder" seal. Evidently there is a seal on the end of the CV joint that presses against a metal plate in the knuckle. Looks like a really bad idea because it is rubbing against the metal all the time the truck is moving.

These simply did not exist on the extended cab, nothing there. I wondered why the bearing was exposed still! Live and learn.

WHICH brings me to my question. These excluder seals are worn 99% off on the Jalape±o also. The CV joints seem to be great, boots still 100% no leaks. Just seal fragments instead of a seal.

Most new CV shafts I saw have the seal on it. Problem is Rock Auto doesn't have a shaft over 50 bucks so I question the quality.

Has anyone used the Rock Auto GSP brand CV shafts before?

I'm still trying to nail down the exact number for the seal, nothing seems to look 100% like it but if a seal is 15 bucks and a shaft with a seal is 45 I dunno.

You'll get it figured out, Jim.  Certainly post what you find for future reference... these trucks aren't done yet!

get CV's from Autozone, lifetime warranty, in town, good CV axles, cheap, always avail, no questions asked warranty exchange

Those seals are just dust boots
the wheel bearings are sealed unit bearings, getting some grime on the backside should not warrant premature wheel bearing failure, that is 110% Detroit axle's fault.
Look at all the 95-01 Explorers running around and 98-11 Rangers and all the other RBV that use the SLA D35 front suspension and sealed unit bearings. You will not find one of these trucks with over 50K miles where those dust seals still exist yet the factory wheel bearings last 200K+

So the duralast CV shafts are good but the duralast wheel bearings are not good?

Ordered the Timken bearings for the front and the camber adjusters I neglected to get the first round.

Still don't have the knuckles blasted and painted.

Yes Autozone Oreilly CV axles last as good as any cheapo's and they are avail with lifetime warranty, no questions asked exchange. I am in their computer as owning a "few
fords.....so anytime I need a new CV axle for one of these trucks = freebie, under warranty

My wifes FJ cruiser eats cv axles, basically the way her suspension sits the inner boot was always rubbing on itself, then split, then losses grease = click click click. Off to Autozone for a free warranty replacement. Takes 20 minutes to swap out. Finally I got wiser and I cut their boot clamp off and add my own clamp, except this time I put the clamp a little further down the shaft so the inner boot no longer rubs on itself. Now I am getting 18-24 months out of her CV axles instead of 6....someday I will buy a long travel setup and be rid of the stock CV axles but until then Autozone CV's for me

That's the crap... my CV axles are working just fine. And I have a good spare set. And I have another set on the POS truck I bought. I just need the seals, looks like they are permaclamped on and I would have to wire brush the area if there was a retro fit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a gallon of UCP970-01 on the way, while I have the knuckles off I'm going to get as much of the frame as I can since my frame is primo anyway might as well make it last the rest of my life.
The bearings and camber adjusters are here from Rock Auto, then I looked at my purchase history... I already bought the camber adjusters when I bought the shocks a few months ago. Now I have to do another front end. :-)

In the past few days I have received:
Chassis saver paint
Door sills
Very cool bulbs for the fog lights
Timken Bearings
My blasted and powder coated knuckles
I ordered new carpet but have no received it yet.
And for those of you not following I already have:
4R70W Transmission for 4WD
4R70w Transmission for 2WD
4406E Transfer case
MULTIPLE engine mounts
A viable 97 5.0 with all the parts for the swap
2 viable 4WD rangers for the swap
