Taking a large trip in the summer/early fall of 2019.

We are tossing around the idea of Australia(cairns) or train hopping Europe.

Which would you prefer?

Couple of things.  Trip will be me, the wife, and 3 kids(16, 11, 7 at the time)
Plan is for 10ish days in country not including travel to and from Seattle.

I've been to Australia including Cairns/Sydney + the opera house, etc etc/Melbourne/Geelong/etc etc. Worked down there for three months, after that one of the many life experiences was living on a dive boat, cruising and diving the Great Barrier Reef for ~10 days. On the flipside, I've been to Spain (worked there for two hellish months) and UK and saw firsthand what *living* was like in those places. Old world history buffs and those that appreciate cool old buildings and the like (including socialism) will like Europe; myself I'd opt to go back to Australia in a heartbeat. Every day is will be a new adventure it's a country the size of the US with ~ 25M people (translation, not crowded). If you like the outdoors, a laid back lifestyle, easy going, fun loving/partying and adventurous people, a place that is much like America was 50+ years ago, then you're destination should be obvious (it's socialist too, lol, look how the place came to be).

I too have been to Australia.
Bunbury, Perth, darwin, townsville, and melboure. So I have an idea of what to expect, which is why it's on the list. Europe is on the list because I love foreign culture, and history.

Australia is expensive. I have worked a few jobs in Perth, Mawson Lakes (just outside of Adelade), and Alice Springs. I would like to go again but the cost of such a vacation is more than I want to spend.

Europe isn't what it used to be. Too many muslimes now unless you go to Poland.

We've budgeted for the expense.

Muslims don't bother me.  I've been to oman, uae, bahrain, malaysia

I guess I'm the odd lot out, I really like just being in one place. I have no desire to travel the world. I don't mind airplanes I've flown a couple dozen times, detroit to new orleans being the farthest.

I have lived as far south as Anderson SC and as far north as Petoskey MI and have moved at least 20 times during my life I just want to stay in one place. Take your vacations, I'll live it through others. It just doesn't thrill me like it does about every other human I have met.

I am with you Jim, I have NO desire to travel the world either. I would rather visit the USA & Canada, we would like to visit Alaska & Hawaii. The trip we are taking to the Bahama's next month will be the first trip we have taken in about 15 - 20 years.

Yup, no envy here :) I would like to have all the money that was spent by you and/or the US government on trips so I could quit my day job a little sooner and concentrate on my projects/hosting business.

Some people want it, some people don't. It's like I can't understand why anyone would own a S10 unless it was given to them then I'd sell it and put the money in a Ranger :)

Different people have different passions. The money I've spent is well worth it.  I watched my dad spend his entire life unwilling to travel.

The money I've spent traveling is well worth the experiences I have.

I can't take this money with me.  So no point in wiring about spending it.  I have a pension, my wife has a large 401k.  We have almost no debt.  The kids all have college funds.

Lol you wouldn't get much time out on what I spend on holidays - the last trip cost me all of $50 to fly out to Italy & back.... and 5 nights accommodation & meals was another $450 or so - riding was free as I own the horse!
