I can't imagine it. The whole world changed over night. I love WWII history. I know nothin I do in the military will come close to what those guys did and for that I'm forever grateful.

I couldn't agree more. Was a different kind of warfare back then. Even though our men and women still die in our global conflicts, it isn't the same face to face combat (normally) that they saw in WWII.

Very True. Today's wars use drones and other means to keep our guys out of harms way while still inflicting casualties on the other side.

Vietnam was the last conflict where we had full on hand to hand combat. It still happens on occasion but not like guerilla style we saw in Vietnam. In WWII we lacked the technology we have now to be able to stay further away from the enemy, plus there was way too many of them spread over vast areas.

How do we liven this thread back up from the darkness we brought upon it?

Not to intentionally continue to keep things dark, I just want to mention that both of my grandfathers fought in WW1 and my dad fought in WW2. One of my grandfathers fought at Vimy Ridge, the other one at Passchendaele. Check google images for those battle scenes. It's no wonder the men that came back weren't the same.

Holy cow, that's awesome that they made it back though.

My father's step dad did like 30 years in the Navy. Retired in '72. Other than that, I'm the only military member in the family. I'm thankful that I'll never see the hell those guys from any previous war saw.

I admire you for stepping up. After growing up in a mostly military town, I decided that wasn't what I wanted. I can't even imagine going through what they did, but yes, they came back.

I actually find the world history and what transpired between WWI and WWII to be quite interesting. As we know (or should), lingering war debt from WWI is what got us into Hitler, and despite the Japs being an ally of ours in WWI, unpaid war debt (in part) changed that. This because, the Japs got rather pissed off when we did an embargo which cut off their supply of steel (early 1940, IIRC) and freezing assets but and contrary to FDR's wishes, we cut off their supply of oil. This caused them a problem, and to boot, by then we had moved military resources from California to......Pearl Harbor. And not soon after all this did they attack us while we were not even at war with them, killing about 2,400 Americans. Good thing we ended it for them as their own governemnt, by their own estimate, was that if we did a prolonged ground invasion we could conceivably wipe out up to 50% of the countrys population. Yes, we did them a huge favor on Aug 6th and Aug 9th, 1945.

I'm fascinated with WWII as well. Band of Brothers is one of my favorite films. The pacific as well.

In japan, we threatened to drop a 3rd bomb but we didn't have it. They didn't know that though. We hoped they wouldn't call our bluff and they didn't thankfully.
The world would be a different place today if we hadn't dropped those bombs.

Collateral damage is unfortunate but at times necessary. The Geneva Conventions and NATO wont let us do that now days, though in some areas it would aid greatly in the destruction of some terrorists organizations. Plus, in the middle of nowhere, Afghanniland there would be minimal collateral damage. Just my $.02.

Just as in WWII, kill a few to save many. Though the scale of few and many was much larger. Same concept.

We're in a lot of trouble if children graduating HS today (and for some time now) are so dumbed down that they don't know we only had two. Brings back the memory of an American history textbook that found it's way into a few high schools in the early 90's. There were some errors RE WWII, just little things (major sarcasm here) like.....the omission of Midway and the inclusion of verbage about how mean America was to drop those two bombs on those poor Japs. I should mention that the author of the book had the middle name Mohammed and when parents wise enough to read their kids textbooks saw this they saw red, and Mohammeds American history book was quickly banished from the classroom.

There's a lot in general that the government isn't telling people. Not even classified things. Like saying we pulled out of Iraq. We still have a pretty large presence there and will for at least 8 years (Obama signed a 10 year agreement).
History is history, right or wrong. Why cant we teach it like it happened? You're right, kids of the future will have no idea what the generation before them did. They will too worried about offending people and being offended themselves.

I think we turned this a bit political, haha
