It is official I am legal in Virginia, we got our drivers licenses, registrations, new Virginia license plates, & my Ranger passed the state inspection. My wife's Explorer Sport is next.

That is remarkable.  I see people literally all the time move here and drive on their old plates for a year or more.

I think Indiana's law requires license, plates and registration all to be transferred within six months of establishing residency.

It is 30 days in Georgia. We also have a one time tax on your vehicle when you get your tags. That can be hefty if you have an expensive car. I see expired out of state tags daily. Most are from California and New York.

The key words here are, "establishing residency" !
Usually doesn't happen until you register to vote.
I used my plates/insurance from MA for almost a year in SoCal, I made the mistake of getting my license changed over and they added the voters registration without asking... too late !

Been here 8 years now so it had to happen sometime.

T-Square, What is this "One time tax" you were talking about for Georgia ?  Why do you even need to pay a tax for bringing your vehicle into the state ?
SoCal's fubar is any out of state vehicles need to get emission testing every year while CA-Vehicles is every two years.

Always something !

Vehicles are subject to Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) when they are registered.  It is 3% to 5% of the value of the vehicle depending on the county you are living in.  On top of that if you live in the 28 county metro Atlanta area there is also emission testing on anything less than 25 years old. It is a BS test that  just checks your computer to make sure no codes are stored.  The TAVT has had a side effect, residents are not trading cars as often.

Also, "establishing residency" in GA occurs the first night in your new apartment or house. There is a 30 day window to get a Drivers License and tags for you vehicles. If you change address within a county the 30 day window applies for updating your address with the DMV for a new DL. Same goes for moving to another county but you also are required to update the tag office prior to current tag expiration. Getting a DL also takes two forms of ID and a document that show you turned on one of the utilities at your new residence in your name.  On the plus side you are automatically registered to vote.

I have a niece that was married to a Sailor. He got stationed in Virginia for 3 years and then got transferred to Kings Bay GA. My niece bought a new Jeep 6 months before he was transferred to VA. She paid the TAVT when she bought the new Wrangler. They bought a house and got VA DL's and tags. When they transferred to Kings Bay she got to pay the one time TAVT again on her Jeep again. She and husband divorced and she moved to Florida where she got married again. New husband was transferred to SW GA. She paid the TAVT a third time on a 8 year old Jeep.

Not surprising.  You keep up the maintenance on your vehicles.
