The latest android update a couple days ago has made my J7 that has been paid off completely for almost 2 years barely usable. I was being pelted from the update before that with "you are running out of space" and "your voice mailbox is nearly full" when I have a 32G MicroSD card that android refuses to save things to and when I do set it to save to the SD card it changes every update.... I used to store 100's of messages in my voice mail and now after 10 it tells me I am full trying to get me to subscribe to some sort of cloud service.

Too bad the pinephone project is all but dead. They couldn't crack the proprietary modem with their non intrusive firmware or that's what I heard. Everything else worked but you still had to use the android modem drivers which sends info to the database collectors.

"The Cloud" what a JOKE !
I shut if off and am told regularly that my Apple Login need to be reset.
I don't and I have one reminder showing up all the time but until I absolutely have to I will not use the Cloud.
I check it after every upgrade just to make sure I am still in the off mode.
Apple now saves all of my books and my music out there... I didn't tell them too WTF... WHY ?
It is all a Government Ploy so the Government can get access to your info even easier than before.

Root your phone and put another OS on it - https://www.pcmag.com/picks/break-away-from-android-ios-7-free-open-source-mobile-oses-to-try

LineageOS supports the J7 from 2015

I'm an iPhone guy.  I had a perfectly functioning 4S that fit nicely in my front pocket and looked like new.  Then iOS 10 came along and Apple didn't support my 4S with this new iteration of their operating system.  No big deal, right?  WRONG!  Next thing I know, my apps started NOT functioning because they moved on from iOS 9.3 and would no longer support my older operating system either.  Had no choice but to get a newer phone.  So I found a gently used 6S on eBay for $125 that I used for almost 3 years.  I then "upgraded" to a mint condition iPhone 7 that I got back from a user when we upgraded phones at my workplace.  Yes, I could get my phone paid for by the company, but I want to keep my number MINE...

Apple ~ Google... not much difference to me.  Both are behemoths that control what we do and how we do it.  Then I could get on my other soapbox and bitch about Amazon ~ Walmart!  LOL

Android not so bad - I am still running a 2015 Samsung phone and it still works with the updates and all the apps work and get updated too. :-)

Sounds like you are lucky, or maybe things are handled different in the UK (most likely this).  I'm with AT&T and have been since I got a cell phone in the 1990s.  Some (like me) swear by them, others swear AT them.  At the end of the day, everyone's mileage varies.

Back when I bought the wife the Mini Cooper she also got off the Razor to an iPhone 4. At that time the only "smart-phone" that was compatible with the Mini. Three years later the phone was acting up and upgraded to a iPhone 6.  I have had various smart phones Android and Windows as I will brake the screen, drop it off an antennae tower, or dropped in the ocean. I weaned the wife off of iPhone when it was obvious she was getting throttled back on data and speed. The Windows phone was crap. I have had the best luck with the Galaxy phones. I am on my 3rd (actually 4th as I dropped my 6S off the tower).  I have had a Galaxy 6S for about 6 years and will upgrade when I break this one or the upgrades no longer work. The wife's 6S went wonky OS wise at the beginning of the year and she now has a Galaxy 10.

Regardless of the brand or OS I will never go with a 5G phone. The 5G signal was re-allocated commercial satellite frequencies. I could shoot a 3 watt signal out to a satellite and cook a pack of hot dogs by throwing them across the beam 2 to 3 times. The average 5G phone transmits at 2 watts. The difference is a signal beam on satellite and a Omni direction signal of a phone. I guess you could weaponize a 5g phone by uploading a large file and drop it in an empty Pringles can. The aluminum lined can would make the signal directional.
