My wife & I were in southern Virginia the beginning of last month looking at some homes. We found a nice 1350 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath brick ranch with an attached carport & A full basement on 1 acre of land with room to put up a 2 car garage. We have been talking about getting out of NJ since NJ is ranked in the top 5 of worst places to retire in, & after doing some research we decided on southern Virginia. So it looks like in about 2 1/2 years when we retire we will be moving out of NJ. The closing should be in a couple weeks, then the fun of renovating it begins. Here is a picture of it I took when we were there to look at it. The house is located in a nice area about 15 minutes west of Martinsville, about 1/2 hour from the North Carolina boarder.

Congrats!!

Ooooh I like the brick!
Needs some other color paint but looks to be a very solid house!
The pink paint makes the bricks and roof look pink too.........

Today my wife & I signed all the papers & had them notarized & mailed them back to our attorney in Virginia so they can file for the new title on Tuesday. The house is almost ours.

Congrats.  Doesn't look like a garage in that picture.  You going to have to add one?

Thanks. No there is no garage, but there is enough room on the side of the house where the carport is to put up a garage.

Congrats on the new house Mike !

We purchased a place in SoCal about six years ago now, two years of remodeling, but we got in and have never looked back.

I was just saying to the wife that we should sell and buy another place, she almost fainted, LoL !

I was thinking AZ for some open carry !

Good Luck with the remodeling !

I would so love to be able to build my own garage!  Years ago I helped my brother in law build onto his house.  He had a tiny one bedroom on a huge lot, so we added a five car sized shop.

I am stuck in Denver for the foreseeable future.  As long as my Dad is still above ground I will probably be living with him.  And my grandson is here.

Out of curiosity, what makes NJ so terrible to retire in? I'm in AZ, and 1/3rd of my neighbors are snowbirds/out of state retirees... They come here for the weather, especially in the winter.

Congrats on the new house Mike!  I don't blame you for looking to move.  I just read an article about the most expensive states to live in, and NJ was on top of the heap along with New York and California.  I HATE Southern Indiana, but it is fairly low cost to live here, so I guess I'm staying here.  Build yourself a nice garage so you can finish your Mustang! :-)

Well my wife & I are back from our 4 day weekend at the new to us house in Virginia, it rained almost every day, good thing we were working inside the house. We changed the locks in the house & took down a lot of pictures & nic nacs the woman had all ove the house. We are planning a trip back down in October to start tearing apart the kitchen & pull up all the carpet & the linoleum in the kitchen.

What kind of distance is the new house from where you currently reside?

It is an 8 hour drive south, from southern NJ to southern Virginia.

Yeah.  So that takes some planning. Not just a “hey honey, let's stop by the new house and work on that todo list” sort of thing. You need one of those personal helicopters.

@Mike: Drive safe on the trip to and from the new house, and best wishes for all your efforts on the renovation to go smoothly! :-)

Side Note: I started my kitchen rip and replace this past weekend, but I don't have far to drive.

OK everyone we are back from our week long start on our renovation of the home we will retire to in a couple years. First we tore out all the old kitchen cabinets which was a pain since they were custom built in place cabinets, but they were old starting to fall apart. We tore up the extra layer of linoleum flooring in the kitchen, & tore off the old 1970's style paneling in the kitchen & the dining room. We tore out all the old carpet & carpet padding only to find almost perfect hardwood floors in all 3 bedrooms, living room, & the hallway leading to the bedrooms. We will NOT cover them back up with wall to wall carpeting like we planned since they are in such good condition. My wife spent 3 days sanding the walls in the 3 bedrooms & the living room since someone painted the walls with gloss paint & we want satin paint & paint will not stick to gloss paint. I also spent 3 days pulling up the tack strips from the wall to wall carpet, & the staples that were holding the carpet pad down. We got the A/C system & the furnace/air handler replaced, upgraded to a tankless water heater, had the attic exhaust fan replaced, the electrical panel replaced with a larger one & had the electric coming into the house upgraded from 100 to 200 amp. The heating/AC company doing all the work also removed the old oil tank & had a propane company install 2 250 gal propane tanks. The furnace & the tankless water heaters are powered by gas, & the stove in the kitchen will be gas. Enough of the explanations now some pics.
What the kitchen looked like before demo.

Kitchen after the cabinets were removed..

Kitchen wall after the paneling was removed.

Living room floor that was under the carpet.

Bedroom floors under the carpet.

My wife's 99 Sport in front of our house with the "green monster" 15 cu yd dumpster off to the side which we filled to the top.
