I got this about a month ago, one of those things I thought was too good of a deal to pass on. A 1988 ezgo gas powered golf cart. It was on letgo for 250, I offered 200 and was told come get it, so I spent 30 min empting out my box trailer and then drove out to get it. was almost dark when I got there so didnt really go over it until the next day. the good: 4 nearly new tires/wheels, 2 of which are painted red (wth) the body was white oringinally but has been painted blue then black. I know I was thinking th engine was most likely toast but I had heard of a few people repowering with a $200 harbour freight engine, well- I didnt do enough research. this is a 2-cycle gas engine, 244 cc. reverse is accomplished by shutting off the motor (which happens when you let off the gas pedal) and the reverse switch merely causes the starter/generator to start engine backwards. yes. I had heard a 2-cycle could run backwards but never knew of it being done on purpose. so theres no gear box, its like a snowmobile drive setup if youve ever seen one, a centrifical clutch on the engine and a varible sheve on the front of the differential. So if you were to repower, thered be some fab work for a engine mount plate and youd have no reverse. if it was a newer 4-cycle, it might be alot easier. was told it had a new carb and fuel pump. I checked for spark, had that but low compression. rebuild kit still available but nearly 400 bucks. (includes crankshaft and new rod, bearings, seals, gaskets) found bad crankshaft seal on ignition side of crankcase during teardown. free spinning crank once piston was out revealed noisy main bearings. cyl/piston scored. g/f thought this would be a nice toy to take to yard sales, I think it belongs in a yard sale. enine very heavy and awkward to go in and out, has steel cylinder and clutch assy and muffler have to be on to go in or out of chassis. I got the new parts put in, waited a full 2 days for the sealant to cure on the crankcase halves before finishing assembly. That went together well. then fight to get it back in the chassis and get all the bolts lined up. It tries to start but just wont stay running, compression really good now, about 115 (was 70) clutch doesnt want to engage at all (and thats another 200 dollar part) I already got a buch of stuff together to make it road legal (lights, mirrors, seat belts)  hell, theres a special bolt thats 40 bucks to take the clutch off with, I made my own with a hitch ball (3/4-fine threads, 2 inches long) and a 3/8 extention. I dont really care for the gas pedal being the start and stop switch, I may change it if I ever get it running. heres a few pictures that my g/f has took. I can tell its been apart before.

Nice! I bet they ran it without an air filter, or didn't mix the gas right, or if it is oil injection something was clogged on the oil passages.

Had one of those belt setups on an old rupp mini bike I had, we called them torque converters back then.

Cool project keep us posted on progress.

So it wont start with the rebuild installed?
I do alot of 2 stroke and CVT stuff

Most 2 stroke sleds (snowmonile) with reverse work that way, reverse = engine stops and starts up but just runs backwards.

Thanks for sharing, you gotta get this thing running!
115 psi is good compression for a 2 stroke
Did you delete the oil injection? Usually we remove the oil injection and just run pre mix
If it wont start with 115 psi compression first make sure its getting fuel, then check your carb (clean)
The first tank of fuel should have some oil in it even if you do have the factory oil injection still installed, this ensures it wont run dry during engine brake in

Some engines you can delete the oil injection and mix some not. I had an old Suzuki 100 I deleted the injection and mixed on. Ran great for about a week, then a bearing went out on the side of the case the shutter valve was on. Turns out the oil injection was lubing that bearing.

the oil injection system was already removed when I got it, I wasnt even aware it originally came with oil injection, maybe that failed a long time ago. I found hi-temp rtv everywhere so someone had been into it at least once. and the exhaust is a cobbled up mess, too hot to work on it today, been very hot lately here.

yeah if the oil injection used to bleed into the case oil bath for the support bearings, then you gotta leave that portion in tact!!!
Dang I love the PNW, its been 74 here all week with clouds and rain

I have NO IDEA if they had oil injection this is the first 2 stroke golf cart project I have been a part of :)

. well wont fire at all today, seems to have spark, know it has compression. battery fully charged so has plenty of cranking speed. wont even hit on either (starting fluid)  guess I need to read up on the carb and ignition setup. And on the clutch, I dont know if it can be took apart or not. Im guessing its rusted somehow and thats why it doesnt try to engage. but first I need to get the engine to run. ez-go? more like not so easy to go

Just keep your eye out for a snowmobile on letgo. Then swap the drive train into the golf cart.

if you have spark and fuel check compression
Could be a simple head gasket

its running now, turned out was the spark plug, weird I know , but its a screamin demon now. gps'd it and it did 22 mph. and with only 1 working back brake. luckily the clutch started working right. at first it wouldnt engage at all, then it wouldnt release. seems to be doing what it should now. just cant put front tire up against a wall and do a burnout, only thing you'll smoke is the belt. lol. its loud. dirt bike loud. doesnt seem to matter if muffler is on or not. still needs some fine tuning too. was fun speeding around the yard. the differential was very low on oil, put a whole qt of 80/90 in there. front hub bearings were growling when i free-spun them, so as a temporay thing I pulled the dust caps off, filled 1/2 way with 80/90 and smacked them back on. later after hot-rodding around I saw where the inside of the front rims are oily. guess I got oil to the inner bearings then, and I have bad seals. well 30+ years will do that to rubber. a couple of $15 bearing kits will fix that. With it running now I probably could get my money back out of it, but its a fun toy. Just wait until the yard is wet, or it snows. I might toss the 8.50-8's for some 5.30-12's, would do 30 mph then, just be a little sluggish on take-off. really its fast enough for me right now.have lights and other "road-legal" crap to put on, body needs some paint. I have plenty of "allis chalmers orange" but not sure what color I want to go with. g/f wants to do it in ohio state. guess I could paint the front rims red then the body grey.  Of course I need another trailer now, it wont fit in the ranger or ranger trailer and im not dragging it places in the box trailer. need a small open 5 x 8 trailer anyhow. just aint buying anymore plates. bad enough the cart will need plates. I should just of put a extra seat on the tractor, no licence, lights, horn or seatbelt required. of course my allis wont do 30 either, hell- "road gear" on it is only 7mph. havent took anymore pictures, pretty much looks the same except for the plywood and boat cushion as a seat, and the metallic blue overspray from when I used it as a painting table for my truck hood. Now its more than a rolling painting table. lol
