Not sure if this question belongs here in tech, but I'm wondering if anyone has modified/upgraded the antenna on their truck. I'm not liking how long it is, the P/S wiper hits it when I lift them to clean the windshield, plus it looks dated which is understandable considering it's age. I found this video looking for replacement ideas so this might be a good cheap solution.

Anyone else got any other ideas or recommendations? I'm not worried about radio reception as I usually listen to my ipod.

I have recently run one without the antenna, the reception was still was not bad. I routinely take the antenna off for the car wash. It does hit the garage door.

Shortening one would work because the reception does not suffer that much trust me.

This is the one I am getting:

Antenna

JAMMAN, we replaced the One on the F150 with one similar.

I know its probably hard to see and I'm parked on a slant. It's about a couple inches below the roof line. The original was taken out by a car wash.

That's why I usually take mine off during car washes. I have a 3/8 open end wrench in my glove box.

Funny thing the latest ranger I bought I tried to take the antenna off and it busted. Never seen it happen, threads stuck and twisted off.

I was able to drill and tap it back out, I had a spare antenna laying around LOL.

Funny how most of the vehicle is metric and the antenna is #10-24 with a 3/8 hex. Go figure.

All OEM antenna's short or long are still 1/4 FM wave.. In today's digital age I find it difficult that people really are going above and beyond to buy full CD's anymore or in the last 5 years; and I've played with everything from in car phonograph to tablets.. 4 Track, 8 track, cassette, Mini-disc, CD's, thumb drives, 4-32GB SD card, even just a mini PC with a 2TB setup was on the drawing board at one time..

My suggestion is unless your fixated on the actual antenna being in its stock location is take the full length antenna, you can actually fish it through under the dash panel itself horizontally and maintain majority of its ability to pull signal, especially if you're in a more urban area or the city itself, by tapping in just behind the glove box. More rural areas or for those of you who live in the South West, you're likely already on the same page and dont really listen to radio anyway.

Then grab one of the shorty antennas that completes your aesthetic desires.. A lot of people will grab from like an Honda S2000 or Scion tC because there like 4.00" 6.24" long antennas, I think even some of the newer Ford C-max, Explorer, or Fusion RTAM (Roof Top Antenna Mounts) can be easily modded with a thread adapter kit much like a wheel-spacer does from one bolt pattern to another.

Just an open suggestion or a direction to follow and modify further in thoughts..

I removed my antenna altogether, created a metal & gasketed plug that screwed in based upon a modded antenna delete part (91-97 Ford Escort) from Ford of all things. The tablet pulls in its own internet, WiFi, or a tethers to another device if needed while Bluetooth'ing the signal to a (first) Audio Control processor then to an amplifier, finally the speakers. Living in SoCal a couple years ago for 8 years and radio reception goes beyond - Suck! Therefor it was for me anyway an easy decision to put a tablet in the dash.

VDub-T,

This is a little late but I run 16" Wipers on my Ranger instead of the 18" OEM size.
Do they hit the Antenna yes but very little, almost a forgotten movement.

Shortening the Wiper Blades reduces drag on the Ranger Wiper Linkage and has not impaired my sight lines. I am 6'2" and the top of the 16" wiper is above my sight line.

The 16" Wiper does not eliminate interference with the antenna but but reduces it and this method does not affect radio reception and 16" wiper blades cost less than 18" units when replacement times comes around.

Just 2 cents !

What did you end up doing for an antenna ?

For anyone looking to delete their antenna LMR Mustang has an oval antenna delete cap to cover the opening where the antenna used to be. I am thinking of getting one & eliminating my antenna on my Ranger since I always listen to my MP-3 player anyway.

I kind of like the idea of no antenna but I do like not listen to the local news sometimes; too much music gets on my nerves.

I am not sure I like that fix though, is the intent to put the antenna back sometime... ?
