 After 4 tries my belt started squeaking again.

It is the water pump pulley which unfortunately relies on the back of the belt to turn it. I could hit the person that thought that was a good idea, you drive with ribs you idle on the back duh.

SO I have a couple laying around. What is the back of that belt looking for.... I could turn it, grind it, bead blast it, paint it, knurl it, pit weld stripes in it, I just want it to stop squeaking.

What is the finish that would grab the back of the belt the best without destroying the belt?

That is a valid point, I have read there was a problem with the harmonic balancer but it turns out being the SOHC motors as best as I can figure. Seriously I have chased this for a while and I have a keen sense of obvious... the problem is anything but.

In case you haven't happened across the other threads, in 4 sessions spanning months:

I first replaced bearings in the idler and tensioner pulley. Cleaned all pulleys. Quit for a while then it started again.
I replaced the water pump (needed anyway), bead blasted the WP pulley, cleaned the other pulleys again. Stopped for a while then started again.
I replaced the belt with a standard gates belt. Quit for a while then started again.
I replaced the aftermarket idler pulley with a stock ford idler assembly from a 4.0 that did not squeak and tried another belt. Quit for a day.

It sounds the same with AC on or off, it sounds the same when binding the steering, the alternator is out in the open and the sound is obviously coming from deeper... around the water pump or harmonic balancer. When you hit a mud puddle or spray water on it it quits for a minute then resumes.


I'm replacing the pulley and fan assembly with one from my explorer that I know does not squeak. Theory being maybe the fan clutch is grabbing at lower temp or rpm than it should.

If that doesn't end it I will track down a gatorback. If you have a link it would be cool because I did a search a while back for the gatorbacks and could not find one for my ranger within my attention span.

Pour a can of coke on the belt and turn the lil black knob on the left side if the stereo up a couple more detents... goes away. Lolololol Jim

 There was an unwritten step where I installed a louder radio. It does work but when I'm in a fast food line I have to turn it off and endure the squeak.

 I bought my Gatorback off Amazon, I want to say ~2012. I can see if I have the receipt and part # if interested (fits SOHC engine).

FWIW......my squeaky belt *career* began at 36,4XX miles (For warranty purposes, wasn't that convenient?). Items addressed:

* Alternator. First replaced bearings (no dice), then had the commutator reground and installed new brushes (one of about three different sets, all in a quest to stop noise). No dice. Problem came and went for maybe another 30K miles. Problem solved with a new NAPA alternator with a lifetime warranty.

* Tensioner idler pulley replaced.....took care of problem for a few weeks.

* Replaced Motorcraft belt with a Dayco (fail) and then with a Gates (fail). Reversed belt directions (fail). There was no belt contamination. None of these provided a permanent fix.

*Meticulously cleaned each drive pulley when belts were swapped or reversed. Never found any debris that could possibly have anything to do with slippage.

* White gloved each pulley for damage/wear that could in any way contribute to the problem. Found nothing. Sanded WP Pulley with #600 along the way; no fix.

* Verified all accessory pulleys were in plane (they were and are).

* Verified the harmonic balancer rubber wasn't tearing and subsequently that it wasn't shredding the belt drive pulley (it wasn't).

*Repeated efforts to pinpoint noise source defied diagnostics using a piece of hose as a stethoscope, the same was true when using a metal rod or a screwdriver.

*** And then I bought a Gatorback. Absolutely could not find it locally nor even 300 miles/4hours away (Seattle). Best $30 ever spent.

I probably left out a few of the many things tried and looked at. This problem went on and it really sucked.

Hey thanks for the post.I saw just on YouTube from the. Gate company that a idler pulley and or a worn tensioner pulley will prematurely ware a new belt causing it to squeal.

 It appears that the "big deal" on the Gatorback belts that keeps them quiet is that they use the same idea that BFG uses on the All-Terrain KO's to keep them quiet (especially the second gen tread pattern). This is, a pattern of various sized cogs along the entire contact/flex surfaces. With this in mind, I did happen to notice a CONTINENTAL 4060878 which if, in the event a Gatorback can't be found, appears to use the same idea and might be worth a shot. Sold at multiple places, Rock has it for mid $20's. Probably a 5% discount code over on Pirate.
