I have the overhead console from a 99/00 Explorer in my 00 Ranger & one of the map light bulbs is burned out & I want to replace it. Does anyone know what size it is because it is very short measuring end to end only about 1 1/8" long. It has writing on the metal end that reads KD 12V 10W. Can anyone help me with the # of the bulb?.

Buggman has a 2 sided LED kit to fit those. I bought one for mine but haven't mounted the OHC yet.

Would my 96 be the same?

Original bulb number is 906 or 912 depending on who you believe. These bulbs are comparable in size and use the same base but the 912 is brighter. Roughly 13 watts vs 9 for the 906.

V8 Level ll, 906 or 912 bulbs are not the bulbs in the map lights of my OHC, they are torpedo style. Here is a pic of the one I took out. I looked at the OHC in my wife's 99 Sport & they are according to her trucks owners manual #168 bulbs in a bulb socket like the dash light bulbs. I am wondering what year OHC I have with those torpedo bulbs?.

The upper right is from mine, it doesn't have numbers but the 2 below are almost identical and say "GE 904" on them. They are out of one of my rear cargo/3rd brake lights.

Yours looks like a 6411 but shorter. If you knew what it came out of then it would be easy LOL

168 fits into the same socket as 904, 906, 912 and many others.

I own two 2nd gen Explorer overhead consoles and have worked on several others but I have never personally seen a torpedo bulb (AKA festoon bulb) in an Explorer overhead console. I just looked in a bulb chart and they list 906 or 912 for the console.

12V festoon bulbs come in 2 or 3 common lengths. Even if you can't figure out the number, it should be easy for an auto parts store to match it.

97% of the time the ohc's will use a 906 type bulb, but there are a few odd ohc's out there that use those small tubular "funky fuse looking" bulbs.

i haven't found a spare one of those odd ohc's to disect & design a custom panel for...yet.

For the OHC, an LED Mod ends up giving a better light to read a map by or just a note.
LEDs are a better light to use because of the color, 5000K, that is !
It might take a little bit to mod the OHC but in the long run you will appreciate the light output a lot more than the standard incandescent bulb.

Sorry I know you don't want to hear it but JAMMAN is correct, talk to Buggman, he's covered this problem everyday you can think of !

Scrambler82, buggman already responded in this thread about my problem. I am the lucky one who has a rare OHC that takes those bulbs. I stopped at Advance Auto Parts after work today & they were pretty useless. I ask if they could match up this bulb & they want to know what model & year it is from, I do not know it came out a truck in the JY. Then they (Advance Auto Parts) say how am I going to get you the right one, you can try to match one up. Big F'n help you are Advance Auto Parts. Well I found one, part #-DE3175 made by Sylvania. Problem solved no thanks to Advance Auto Parts. Thanks to all here who tried to help me out.

Thanks, I knew he responded, I was giving support to the idea of LEDs, but thanks for telling me !

when you do an LED Mod, yes you can go with the Plug and Play or you can hard wire it... I am sure The Buggman, can support a hard wire setup.

Again, Led will be sssooo much brighter than OEM Incandescent bulbs !

Good Luck with your Light Bulbs !

Added:  Looking back I see you have the "Garage Opener" type of OHC; maybe thats the difference !
I have removed a number of OHC from Explorers and looked inside before selling them and never saw too much different in the bulbs.
Biggest thing is to cut off the connectors and hard wire LED Panels to the electrical system; the hard wiring removes the connector and reduces connection problems !

AND...Thanks for your insult, I try to support others in their ideas, giving suggestions rather than just go with the flow !   You, on the other hand... well I will leave it alone ! Just saying thanks again and I now know where you stand !

buggman, my OHC map lights do not have any electrical contacts on the housing where the bulb goes into like the one in my wife's 99 Explorer that has the "dash light type" holder & bulb with the printed circuit connection for the power. (see attached link).
https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-NEW-Overhead-Roof-Ceiling-Console-Dome-Map-Light-Bulb-Lamp-Ford-F67Z13776CA/321951328108?fits=Year%3A1999%7CMake%3AFord%7CModel%3AExplorer&epid=1211135633&hash=item4af5cb676c:g:Iy8AAOSwe7BWxdcW
The "torpedo" type bulb just has a twist lock cap that holds tension on the bulb to make electrical contact I would guess, did not look up in the opening, but mine does not have the printed circuit like in the pic. I will have to take a better look at my OHC to see if something can be done to possibly change it over to the 906 bulbs.

Insult, what insult? If you are talking about my post #-12 about finding the bulb at Advance Auto Parts the insult was about the lack of help from the parts store not to you or anyone else that has been trying to help me out here. If that is the way it sounded I am sorry.

I read through and didn't get the sensation of anything but frustration at realizing there was a non-standard light bulb in a OHC, I'm certain it wasn't directed toward any particular member, just the product itself.

i'm not 100% sure if the 906 bulb reflector assembly will just drop right in place of the mini festoon bulb style, but i have a bunch of the 906 bulb assemblies that i pull out of ohc's when i install my led conversion panels.

if you get a chance to pull your ohc down, check the wiring from the bulb assembly to the display portion. if all the wires are black, the connector may be in a different location. if the 3 wires going to the light assembly are green, red & black, it might work.

seems like the 2 styles of ohc's (not just the sunroof model & garage door opener model) use different boards & a few things are moved around.

if all else fails, just grab an extra ohc from your local junkyard (if you have any local jy's) and swap the electronics around & toss the old bulb assembly & grab one of my led conversions lol.
