Not sure what to label this, but I've begun questioning the meaning of life over what seems to be a simple issue...
I am planning a 4x4 swap - have most of the parts already. Not bad yet, right? Well I have a 2003 Stickshift manual And I want to use a Manual transfer case. And here is where my problems lie.
Originally, I figured I'll just use a 01+ transmission and create a bracket to help me make the loose ends come together. Then I realized that 3.0 4x4 manual transmissions are impossible to find newer than 2001 and expensive when you do find them, but older ones are cheap as dirt.
No problem then, right? Buy an older case and swap tailshaft housings? That's what I would do! But junkyard don't sell just the tailshaft housing. And I don't pay $600 (give or take) for a transmission that may need a rebuild.
So, after calling every junkyard in America and Canada that has a level 2 only to find that someone has bought the tranny from every single one, I have decided a new plan. And this is where I need your help to either tell me I am crazy, or to give technical info if I am not.
I have a mill, drillpress, and so on all at my disposal. I will soon also have 2 tailshaft housings from trucks that had the bosses, but no VSS. I also have time on my hands and worst case a professional machine shop full of people who love money.
Now all I need is an answer. Can a tailshaft housing from an older M5OD be modified to have a VSS, or are there too many factors against me? I am able to put the right size hole in the right location, and would be willing to do some for others if successful, but need to know where the sensor must be and how exact its location must be.
