 So this is an intermittent noise, which makes it so much more fun. 

1998 B4000 4x4 with 107k miles. 

It happens usually if I am driving one direction then go the other, or if I am parked on a hill, but only like 10% of the time.

I am leaning towards u-joints, but wasn't sure if somebody had a different recommendation to check before I crawl under the truck.

 You nailed it. You have to crawl under your truck. Could be one of a gazillion things, if you don't see anything right away don't discount frozen calipers or possibly the transfer case.

So let us know what you find!

 Noise described sounds exactly like what I was hearing. It was the rear u joint.

 Ordered some spicer u-joints for the rear axle. I'll replace those just because, and check everything else while under there.

 Surely as you remove stuff you will find what is wrong. I have seen u joints that didn't shake by hand but when removed they were full of rust and barely moved. Let us know what you discover please!

Will do, I tried checking by hand a few weeks ago, but couldn't find any play anywhere. I hardly ever drive anymore, so it's hard to get the energy to work on it, especially when my jeep is torn into pieces. but I would rather not have my driveshaft fall off my truck. I've seen the damage that does.
