I found a dude here in columbus that bought a crate motor 4 years ago and is selling it.

Long block, the paperwork says 71 F150 or econoline.

All new, wants like 800 bucks for it, half what he paid. Inside on a stand.

I have lost my early ford pizzazz, so from the people who know stuff here can I bolt an expo intake system on it and would it be worth it.

I'm leaning heavily toward no, I would have to see what cam is in it. Those early ones were not rollers and I think they will not tale roller lifters due to the gallies not being cut for the notch?

The only great thing is it would be a fresh piston fresh rings fresh valve springs and seals... even from 71 they went like 80K miles without problems. I wouldn't have to tear it apart.

The sensors/distributor replacement with the synch thing, none of that bothers me I can figure it out that is fun.

I'll see it today and get copies of the paperwork, probably call the builder to see if it has been updated for unleaded fuel LOL.

I dunno I'm just lazy at this point and want to put something together that I won't have to pull in 6 months.

An engine for a 71 F-100 or Econoline that is 8 or even 10 years old NIB will have the hardened valve guides. Ford fixed that back in 1980. You also have a flat tappets and I believe you are correct about not being able to covert it because of the  lack of cutouts in the galleys.  That should be a 210 HP  engine with a 2 barrel carb at 9.5:1 compression.

A cam that gives more low end torque, headers, and 4 barrel would wake that 302 up.  The early 302/5.0 had a different firing order than the later 5.0's. The later  5.0-HO's had the same firing order as the 351 Windsor. So if you want to put a 5.0-HO fuel injection system on it you will need to find a flat tappet cam with the 351W firing order to match the fuel injection timing. There is a pile of "gotchas" trying to modernize one of the early 302's. Almost all of them are sensor or computer related.
