I was on my way to work this morning and my CEL came on, on my lunch break I went to Oreillys for their free CEL diagnostic thing, and the guy said it was an EGR valve. I called autozone (I've never had any bad parts from autozone, and there's one closer to me than an Oreillys) and they could get me one today by 5. After work, I went to the autozone and had them do another diagnostic, and the code was P0400. The guy said there's no real pin point fix, and that I should have it properly diagnosed with a scan tool. Well, seeing as how I already bought the EGR valve I figured might as well try it and if it fixes it, excellent. If not, oh well nobody hates new parts right? Lol. Anyways, on my way home I was trying to listen for pinging or something during acceleration or a rough idle, and suddenly noticed my CEL is off now. Could the EGR valve have been stuck and loosened itself, or something else? Should I go ahead and install the new EGR? Thanks in advance.

Autozone - 5 power steering pumps before I got one that worked.

Sorry I lost my train of thought.

you guys it doesn't really matter where the parts come from these days they all sell similar parts
Never buy re manufactured starters, alternators, power steering pumps, etc
You want NEW

P0400 = EGR flow malfunction

This means that during self test of the EGR system something went wrong
Then the light went away
this means that during the next self test the problem was not there so the light and code were cleared

Expect it to come back, although EGR codes are the ones that pop up and then clear themselves the most. Typically they will come back when those same conditions are experienced again (altitude, fuel octane, driving conditions, etc), it could be days weeks or years.
Typically a EGR flow issue is a blocked or cut EGR feed tube to the DPFE (differential pressure feedback sensor EGR)
I would not suspect a faulty EGR valve just yet, instead I would inspect the EGR system, check the hoses leading to the DPFE, check the DPFE for plugged passages, have a look see at all wiring connections on the EGR, clean everything up and put it back together.
Typically the rubber EGR hoses and DPFE fail long before the actual EGR valve itself.

Unless it is an emergency where I have to have the part TODAY, I buy my stuff from RockAuto.  They have NEW starters, alternators and such with prices that are comparable to the box stores re-manufactured units.  Like Jamie stated, AutoZone, O'Reilly's or Advance; they are all pretty much the same... AND expensive.

I used to be at oreillys, the zone, pep boys, carquest, napa on the daily
Now I only go there on the monthly
I split my parts buying between Rockauto, Summit, Amazon and Ebay mostly.....and here at this house we buy ALOT of parts.
Some things are expensive to ship, like brake parts or fluids I still get in town very often
Shop around, Rockauto for the WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

My son just bought a brake caliper from RockAuto. He really wanted to just get the truck fixed (his F150). But the local parts stores wanted over $70 for the re-manufactured caliper plus core.  RockAuto was about $25 less, brand new caliper, no core. Even with shipping, it was still WAY cheaper.
