Ok, I found the temp sensor for the gauge on my 93 ranger. After first confusing it with the oil pressure sensor, which is just above it. What a lousy location - both on the left rear side of the block. Anyway, grounding the line pegs the temp gauge, so fairly certain the sensor is bad.
Ok - I got it! After laying across the engine trying to reach in to get to the sender, all I managed to do was crack a vacuum line, and scratch the $#*&% out of my arm.
What I did was to remove the inner plastic wheel well, and then it was fairly easy to reach with an extension. So the new sender is installed, wire hooked back up. Started it up, let it run for a few minutes to check for leaks, etc.
It ran long enough to blow warm air from the heater, but the gauge never budged from cold. I'll check it again tomorrow when I leave & it has a chance to actually come up to temp. Hope thats all it is, or maybe the wire isn't making good contact on the terminal.
Yep, turned out to be a messy job - had a catch pan under the truck, but still got coolant all over the garage floor...
