So for the past couple of years I've noticed paint flaking off off my hood. At first it wasn't too bad, just small pieces here and there...and then the Texas sun said â€œF youâ€ and then baked the heck out of my paint. Now, it's so bad that I feel embarrassed by it. Today, I've decided to remedy it once and for all!! Here's a before, tomorrow I will post an after.

Oh boy.... I hope it involves sand paper!!! You can buy single stage G9 vista blue in a spray can from walmart. I've been using it and it works well!!

The prep work getting a smooth clean surface is key to a good paint job. Another thing to remember the sun has also faded the rest of your paint.

That's a good point. And thank you Eddie for the link, but you inspired me to be a little more creative with this one. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while, so I'm excited to finally do it.

Alrighty. Looking forward to the big reveal!!!

I've found that patients is key with paint. Unless you are a pro be prepared to do things a couple of times. Sand paper is your friend.

In the areas where paint chipped away you can use a filler primer to get those areas back even with the rest of the paint.

I've had to sand and start over a couple times with the emblems I'm working on. I'm hoping I get it right today!!!ðŸ¤ž

Boy do I love cheap tools....lol. Anyways, while I wait for the drill to charge here are a few teaser/progress pictures:

Taping the corners of the fender and top of the hood so I don't over sand:

Some progress. I'm using a wire wheel on my drill to pull out the spots that are missing paint, basically just aggressively feathering them out. Then, the directions say to scuff all glossy surfaces so after I'm done doing the spots the whole hood will be scuffed up.

Spray this on the bare spots and once you have it all the same level, then scuff the rest with 300-400 wet sand. Then paint away...

I started with rustoleum too but I had problems with it and switched to duplicolor and got better results.

Done!! Kinda, lol. It started raining so I wasn't able to get the clear coat on, and I need to touch up the lines on the star. Plus I got a light over spray on stuff, but rubbing alcohol cleans that right up. I'm super pleased with how it came it, even with the bad sanding.

That looks awesome. Good job!!! Way to get creative with a bad situation.

Let the paint cure before you attempt your minor fixes(2days). You'll need to lightly scuff to promote adhesion to the entire painted area before you clear.

Thank you! Even though it aint perfect I'd prefer this over the flaking paint. I like it a lot. Once I get a windshield, new bumper, and a new door the truck will look so much better.

Cool idea but prep is your friend !

Paint doesn't fill imperfections.

Also, waxing the Truck is mandatory in sunny areas.

if you ever want to do factory Color, I bought color match from touchupdirect which was a perfect match, and for a clear coat I used this stuff:

I sanded back my hood and front bumper bits, and re sprayed them, Turned out amazing for my first real attempt. I'll probably do it again, but not with rattle cans next time, and more layers.
