John Cooper was very much British - he & his Dad set up the Cooper car company - the Australian connection comes with Jack Brabham who designed & drove for them.

They saw the potential in rallying the original Mini and worked on it to make it a world beater.

Since those days Mini Coopers are just tweaked production vehicles - the Cooper's have never even breathed on them!
