When I was in Afghanistan we carried the M4 and the M9 but some of the back shop and office guys had the old school M16. That thing is massive compared to the M4's 16" barrel.
In my unit, we had our own armory and had to maintain a large number of GAU-5s. It was a full auto M16 modded with a 16" barrel and 4-position butt stock. Essentially it was a full auto M4, but older.
The new replacement for the M9 is supposedly the Sig P320. It will have interchangeable barrels to run 9mm, .40 and .45 calibers. It will also come in desert sand or FDE, whichever color you want to call it. Just a small contract of $580 million. I think that's just for the Army as well, you know, pocket change!
