I will admit, I have had to use the forward assist once. It was my own fault after disassembling and cleaning though. I didn't put the buffer spring back in, so when I pulled the bolt to the rear it stayed. Luckily, I was able to inch it forward with the forward assist so I could pivot the lower down to reinstall the spring. I think it's there from the A1 and military use. In harsh terrain who knows what all can end up in your weapon. A few specs of hard sand in there and it may not want to move. Just like the warning labels on plastic wrappers for kids...it was put on there because someone screwed up at some point.
