I have been there for a couple of years. My dad was a 1911 nut. He had just about every major brand in all available calibers. He would buy one, change out a few parts to get it "tuned right" and turn around and sell it to fund the next one. He kept 5 or 6 all of the time. I shot most of them and was never very impressed as the heavy hitters always hurt the palm of my hand or pinched. His daily carry was a Colt Commander in 38 Super for many years and latter on a Colt Commander in 9mm. He liked having 10 rounds and always said Colt was the standard. Springfield Armory was a close second. About 2 years ago I decided to put my Taurus 92AF into semi-retirement and needed a new range toy. My shooting buddy who also worked at one of the LGS's suggested the Colt Govt 9mm with the Competition barrel - he said if I didn't like it he would buy it from me for what I paid for it. Out of the box it is the best shooting gun I have ever shot and is stupid accurate with a very good trigger. I have about 7k rounds through it.
