That's the first time I have been asked that question... the area known as Wine Country. Some of the best California Wines come from Southern California.:) No matter what area of California they describe themselves as having some of the best California wines.
I did a year out at Paso Robles when I was in the military. The trucks that were used in the vineyards had a bumper sticker "Paso is for wine, Napa is for auto parts". The ventners would donate cases of wine to soldiers that worked at the base. I would average 4 bottles of free wine a week.
I can attest that California makes the best wines in the world.
