The Remington 7 series are great guns. My 30-06 is the Model 78 that I got in the early 80's and it came with a cheap birch stock that I upgraded to a 700 BDL stock. I have made an 850 yard kill with it in Texas on a aoudad sheep hunt.

It sounds like the mag release on you Axis is adjusted too low or you have a bad mag. The Axis can be a bit finicky but they usually have tight chambers and are accurate. I have only shot the .308 Axis setting up a scope for my next door neighbor.
