I purchased my 2000 Ranger in Oct 2013 & after a few months it started to develop a engine miss. After checking it out I found #4 spark plug was fouled out, put in a new plug & it ran good for a few more months. Besides the engine miss the engine was also consuming coolant, but did not smoke. This went on for a few years because it was easier to replace the plug then tear the engine apart. I had checked the compression & it was good, fuel pressure was good, then in March 2016 I was out of work for a couple months & replacing the spark plug no longer made it run good I decided to tear the heads off the engine after reading all the stories about cracked cylinder heads on 4.0 OHV engines. Well sure enough once I got the heads off there was a small crack between the valves in front of the drivers side head (#-4 cyl) & between the valves in the back (#-3 cyl) of the passengers side head. If you look closely you can see the crack between the valves. ![]() ![]() New heads & water pump on, I also replaced all the lifters while it was apart & rebuilt the rocker assemblies. ![]() Top of the engine is back together. I also replaced all the injector seals before reinstalling the injectors. ![]() It is looking like an engine again. Almost ready to run. ![]() Last edited on Tue Oct 24th, 2017 02:44 pm by Mike69 ____________________ 21 Bronco Sport Big Bend (Wife's DD) 05 F150 XLT Reg Cab, 2WD, 5.4L, Auto (My DD) 69 Mustang Coupe 5.0, 5 spd 9" rear(Project) 14 Kawasaki Vulcan (Wife's Toy) |
