For small arms, the Air Force has us use CLP (cleans, lubricates, protects). The environment will determine how much you use. In humid climates, you want to keep everything with at least a little lubricant on it to keep from rusting. Down range (in the desert) you don't want to use too much as it tends to collect dirt and debris. But you may have to clean and lube your weapon more frequently. I use the same stuff on my own weapons. I've never used "grease".
