Sounds about like my luck.

When I had a few less gray hairs I owned a pinto, one of about 3 I owned at different times.

It would only go like 40MPH then would start starving for fuel.

I replaced the tiny filter, it didn't help.

I put a new fuel pump on (mechanical) and it still did the same thing.

So I backed it in my garage, took the fuel line off going to the tank.

I stuck a rubber hose around the fuel line then blew with my mouth through the rubber hose.

I was on my back and I heard a noise, looked back at the tank and a huge flake of rust had become dislodged exposing literally a hundred or so pin holes, all of then dripping. A couple dripping would have been OK but 100 little leaks equals one large one and since the floor was pitched outward I had a literal river of gasoline headed at my skull.

I managed to dodge it but it was a huge mess.

Nobody would sell a Pinto gas tank because of the lawsuit so I emptied it out, scratched it up with sandpaper and put a thick coating of sealer on the bottom. When it dried I re mounted it, put a new fuel line on it and sold it.
