When I changed my TC solenoid a few years ago for a shifting stiffness problem I had, there was a plunger and a spring behind the plunger. I pulled the plunger and spring, it was kinda mucky. I cleaned it all up and oiled it, I could feel some "catching" between the plunger and the side of the bore wall, like there was a burr in there. I wish I would have taken the valve body off (watch for the balls if you do and have a map handy) because the first drive I took it was actually worse. Mine would bang into gears like it had a shift kit. First to second the worst, could still feel it in 2 to 3 but the initial torque has less effect as the gearing gets higher. First test drive after the filter, cleaning spring and plunger, replacing TC solenoid, replacing fluid that came out it actually locked up on me and stalled as I was leaving the neighborhood like I forgot to push the clutch in. I re started it and from then till a couple weeks ago when I replaced the engine and transmission it still banged into gears like a shift kit. On a stupid side note I could put it in reverse, step on the brake and gas to stress the transmission and it would shift forward perfectly normal for a half hour or so or until I put it in park whichever came first. I wish I would have had the money and space to disassemble the old one I bet it was mechanical. But I sold it for pennies just to get it out of my garage.
