Just to jump in on this one - it is not just that the site may be corrupted / carry malware - in itself https does nothing to stop that.

The problem is twofold - first, the data travelling between servers is not encrypted, so anyone could intercept it / read it / inject things into it - second, if you have secure and non secure content on a web page, more and more browsers are throwing a "dangerous site" warning up or coloring your screen a pretty red color. This is not reassuring for potential members!
