So I'm working on a 2016 explorer for a friend who has spent hands full of money and has been to 3 shops now. It has that 4 cyl ecoboost which seems sinful to put such a tiny engine in such a huge car but they did. He has a mild intermittent miss that tosses a code sometimes minutes after reset. The "shops" have replaced a coil or 2, did the head gasket, and basically left him flat. So I offered to look at it. Plugged in the obd2 and started poking around with forscan. Upstream O sensor, zero volts and never changes. Bank 2 in closed loop, bank 1 error. My idea is to physically remove the O sensor and put a torch to it... but if it is a 4 wire can you still get voltage with a torch like the old ones or do you have to hook it up to 12V first? If I put a torch to it and the voltage rises even 1MV then there is something amiss in the wiring between the sensor and the pcm, if it doesn't rise then the sensor itself is bad? I have never touched an ecoboost.
