Toy's develop frame rot. They do not do ample rust proofing on their frames. I preemptively sold a 2000 Tundra 4x4 X-cab V8 as it had frame rot and a car engine in a truck.

A recent TSB on some vehicles, notably 4Runner, Tacoma, and some Tundra's.

the most recent and actual recall was due to a process skipped at Delphi that somehow got cross logged.  No one wants to discuss it much but I happen to know a few people in Toyota who for the sake of friendly conversation over a good coffee... well, you know.

Sadly it's caused a lot of grief for both companies, maybe even some slanted relationships.  I do know Toyota was doing a major recall on affected units, as well as demanding the old frames be returned back to Toyota for some evaluations, processing, proof (?).

But..,

They're ONLY replacing the frames. There are multiple other parts/items required to be swapped out like fuel & brake components, and others  needed in order to do the frame swaps. Costs can be upwards of $5k+ and that falls on the customer from my understanding from a service 17+ yr veteran advisor I know at Toyota.  Unclear if that is an insurable covered cost factor or the car is a total loss.  I know a few people that had the issue, and have and haven't had the procedure done.

The level of rot can easily vary by how a customer treats a vehicle.  There are some frames under the recall that barely had surface rust on the affected frame where others had far premature penetration in some spots and both being in the salty-snow belts.  My 91' 4Runner, SoCal vehicle has nearly zero rust on anything under the chassis.

i.g. - this older truck body as old as it is body is in premium shape, moderate rusted frame Toyota paid for the new frame which is in the latter 3 photos.  This vehicle was given a new life and the young man that owned it had picked up a 2JZ from a source in Japan for it to build a drift/race truck from my understanding. It's been a year or so since I've spoken to him, not sure where he is at in it.

Like anything on the internet, you'll see more misery or bad press than good press.  Toyota still ranks in the highest value for reliability and least amount of service lane attendance than most brands. I know no one likes to talk about that but the facts exist.  Although a recall isn't alway bad news, it's just the company following up on a better component for customer retention as well as safety, GM having the highest amount of recalls in general, they just had another 5.9M vehicles recalled thanks to another supplier blunder, Takata airbags which actually involved 25 deaths. - https://www.allenandallen.com/general-motors-recalls-a-full-list-of-recalled-vehicles/

GM leading the pack, this informative and interactive box is fun fact loaded. - https://time.com/45235/gm-recall-model-interactive/
