My dad was a 1911 fanatic. He had most brands in all available calibers. His view was the 38 Super was the best caliber for the 1911 platform with the 9mm a close second. I wasn't that big a fan as I liked the Browning Hi-Power design better.  Beyond "here, try this one" I was not that impressed as most 45ACP, all 10mm, 400 Corbon, .455 Webley, and 9—23mm Winchester as the hard hitters would pinch the palm of my hand when I shot it. I have never liked a gun that hurt when you shot it. His carry piece was a Commander in 38Super that he had a 9mm Lugar conversion. He kept it in 9mm.

I am kicking myself for not taking a greater interest in 1911's and the tuning aspects. I only paid enough attention to field strip a 1911.  Every 1911 dad had he would be polishing a piece, tuning the ejection, or changing the slide spring to make it shoot like it was supposed to. He always said the best 1911 made was the Colt Government model and that is what I have. It has been by far the best new pistol with a tight lockup, competition barrel, crisp trigger, and fiber optic sights.

It is clean right now. It had been a few months since I have done anything past spraying it down with brake cleaner, run a copper brush of Hoppe's #9 down the barrel, and lube it. There were no deep cleanings. I cleaned some big carbon deposits that were inside. It is my understanding that the springs on a 9mm are supposed to last twice as long as a 45ACP. I have also seen a 45 ACP Kimber's mainspring worn out at 1000 rounds.  I am hoping the springs fix it.
