Maybe I have deleted cat converters a time or seven
And maybe I found out that there are no codes when you do so
And maybe it is because the function of the catalyst is to burn un spent fuel....well if your engine is running properly like a good 2010 SOHC engine should, then there will not be a bunch of un spent fuel to be catalized.......so no codes have ever shown up for me. Not one of our trucks still has primary or secondary cat converters still in place (hollow chambers)
and None of us have codes..............BUT I have not done this with anything newer then 2001, IF I did it at all....lol
So there are PRIMARY cat converters which are the small ones in your Y pipe,
(the first 02 sensor is upstream of the PRIMARY cat) (B1S1 and B2S1)
then the downstream 02 sensors (B1S2 and B2S2)
The second set of sensors is also known as "catalyst monitors" because that is all they do, monitor the function of the cats.....they do not do much.
The upstream sensors are the ones that do all of the oxygen sensing for the PCM to adjust fuel/air.
Then you have your secondary cat converters, behind the catalyst monitors...these things you an delete all day long and will have no ill effects and you can pass emissions in most states without them since they were only required for FEDERAL emissions. CA and others may be different. Here in Idaho we do not have tail pipe emissions YEAH!
So in conclusion cat converters are awesome, unless you like free flowing exhaust. I have never had a code from having NO upstream/primary converters in place on OHV, SOHC or 5.0 trucks...
Now that I am in Idaho I can say my primary cat converters were always just there for "looks" while the honeycomb catalyst inside was MIA..... where did it go? MUMS THE WORD
Also your primary converters are worth anywhere from $65-150 each, secondaries, $40-100 each.........just sayin.
