I've never owned a set but have been reading about them since they were first introduced. Back when you actually had to read hot rod magazines and ad magazines. Best story I got was you could leave it off and drop the engine in the explorer easier with headers on. I heard a second story that if the engine is installed it makes it easier to put the back side on first then the little sub tube. Then I have heard the horizontal flange is VERY difficult to tighten with the engine in. So I have no idea but I bet it becomes evident when you put them on. All the copies have the same setup so there must be a valid reason, you wouldn't continually copy a mistake would you?
