I also remember having AR cleaning parties in the shower when I was in the military. We would take our M-16A2's into the shower after loading them up with Edge shaving cream. There was something about it that dissolved all the carbon build up. After all the crud was washed away we would hit them with WD-40 to get rid of the water and then the air hose to get rid of the WD-40. The last step was to coat everything in CLP and wipe it down than put the hand-guards back on. They would pass the sergeant's inspection but when the armorer would inspect them he would know. He didn't mind the the shaving cream and hot water but it was the WD-40 that he objected to.
