Chris, FORD also stand for "First on Race Day"; which so many car manufacturers have found out the hard way. Ford has won almost every car race there is at least once, even Ferrari felt Ford's sting !
As for a comment on the Tailgate Handle... I might regret saying anything, but I have owned my '03 EDGE for 13 years and I have had the new Steppie Bed and Tailgate on it for at least 11 of those years. I have never had a problem with the handle or latch mechanism.
I do grease in the internals every couple of years and add white grease to the latches and the Plastic Lined Hinges every year, along with the door hinges, so it is what I would call well lubed.
Maybe that is the key, take the inspection cover off, first check for worn parts, once that is done and/or the worn parts are replaced, get some White Lithium Grease or the Heavier Red Sticky grease (I like Morley's), add what you think is necessary to all moving part joints and the latches, repeat as often as you think is necessary.
