Even though the 1911 was designed for the 45ACP it shines with the 38Super and 9mm. My dad was a 1911 fanatic. During the 70's through the mid 80's I was exposed to almost every brand and caliber available in the 1911 format. My biggest lessons were that the heavy hitters like the 10mm, 45ACP, 9x25 Dillon, .40S&W, .41 JDJ, .455 Webley, .41 Avenger, 38 Casull, .45 Super, and . 50GI would all be of limited use because they hurt if you fired it too much. The other thing was the Kimber, Dan Wesson, Wilson, Baer, and Night Hawk may bill themselves as "ultimate" 1911's it is not too hard to upgrade a REI to the same level for half the price. The problem with upgrading a REI (or any other 1911) is that it is still worth REI prices. The other issue with a high end 1911 is that any small blemish in the finish can knock hundred's of dollars of value off of it. With my Colt Government model any holster wear is acceptable patina and even a minor scratch that will not affect the value much.
