Just as an add-in.. you mentioned 3157 bulbs in brightness in comparison to 921.. etc If you weren't aware the same classification of bulbs like a 3057 is just slightly less wattage than a 3157 just as a 3257 or 3357 increase in brightness to each one above.

I.G.; (all examples are Std Halogen caliber ratings from Sylvania)

 3057 - 6.7W 12.8, 14.0 Volts S8 bulb
 3157 - 8.3W 12.8, 14.0 Volts S8 bulb

So you still have an opportunity to brighten up the lighting while still maintaining circuit integrity still. Depending on the amount of bulbs in the circuit, may have to make slight calculation if the circuit is large for increase in draw. Just be mindful of what else is on the that circuit when tapping for other things if you do.

I have to admit for the sake of conversation I am torn on lighting in some ways. I am probably the wors person to be behind at a light or on a hill. It drives me to madness when people pull right up on my bumper so close that I can no longer see your hood or windshield in some cases. I will have NO quams at all about letting my truck roll back freely and roll the clutch back and forth with the gas pedal to let you know you're too close and I don't want to be a part of YOUR problem should you get rear ended.. especially since here in Vegas that seems to be a THING beyond normality.
Also I would/should sustain less damage being of free wheel or ready to get on it in gear than sit there and take the brunt as an unmovable object which we all know doesnt really hold enough water to count on the odds.

But when I want light, I go all out with what I have but when I want to be unnoticed or disappear I've accommodated other ideas. for example, I have a circuit in my panel, its the ONLY red lit switch I have in my display. This purposely mounted upside down "red" switch kills off just the brake lights on the back of the truck and on the right side of the circuit to the brake switch above the pedal. There are plenty of times being out in the darkness and not wanting to give away my presence out in the desert, hills, dark in general. Now when this switch is activated, I can still use the running lights, but the brake light stays "silent" per se.

Now all of my lighting switches has a physical legend to it both by feel and light indication. As you mention going from a two bulb setup to a three way setup. i kind of have done something similar too. Most of the "better" brands of LED tail lights for the 93-97 all transition to a 2 bulb setup now. So what I have done because for some reason, I still like the amber turn signals. The LED lights use a jumper and plug & play connectors to include the brake light to function as a turn signal and then the second light is a clear section for reverse.

On top of removing the reflectors inside and making it appear as if they weren't there, I may actually go against my own rules and lightly tint the lenses just enough to hide any possible blemishes and remove that half empty tail light look seen below. And I am modifying the wiring to accept the brake light as such, I will remove and rewire the jumper to make the reverse light sockets NOW become the turn signals and replace the kept halogen reverse lights in the LED tail lights to amber LED's and the reverse lights will remain as my Bumper light(s) in the current bumper and future multi-carrier bumper.

Single reverse light currently, there is thoughts of another light being mounted higher up as a reverse alley light but I'm thinking unnecessary thus far.

To compliment the brake light kill switch, I am being driven to buy a brand that i don't particularly care for but I haven't picked these lights up simply because I am moving towards a 98+ front end conversion and since the grill work is gonna change, well that may throw some things off and then again simplify it too, I don't know yet. I could prescribe a dual light setup in the front bumper using the D2 Rigid I.R Driving lights as the outside lights while keeping the brand I prefer in a cube fog light in the inner holes to cover all the bases.

D2 IR Driving Pair

OR Then I could save a few dollars and just mount this in the grill area or perhaps on the front bar work of the winch bumper but I'd really prefer to be a lot more low key with it and hide it in the grill work above the future winch.

SR-Series IR 10" Combo

This is all on top of a Forward facing 20" LED light in the bumper, a 40" LED overhead roof light, a left and right Individually controlled 6" LED alley lights [possibly may be swapped in favor of a 10-12"], plus rock lights. which I'm not going to post any of those pics up. Some things I have in boxes, some others not yet..

So I dont know if I fit into your Moth-ology or not.. lol
