they attached with a big through bolt and O ring: I believe it is 7/8"? don't quote me on that.....

I did not look yesterday, if you want to get the powdercoated one please do then I can keep mine in my collection :) Anytime I do a conversion with the 96-97.5 engine I REMOVE the oil cooler, so I use these things alot

FUNNY STORY, I just googled "explorer 5.0 oil filter adapter" and the picture above came up from full size bronco forum. Why is that funny? Well that is a picture I took many many many years ago of an engine I bought back in Colorado to revive a certain 5.0 Explorer. I was a little worried about the smashed oil filter but did not think much of it. Well I should have. I went through the trouble to refresh and install that engine into a 98 Explorer I wanted to flip. This must have been 12-15 years ago now? Anyways the dang truck/engine had no oil pressure. I tried to fix it in the truck to no avail, after a few weeks of messing with it now I had a ton of money into a truck with no oil pressure.. It ran for 5-15 minutes while I was troubleshooting with no oil pressure.
I lost interest in the project and put it to the side. My stepson ended up buying this truck from me for his wife. He and his brother pulled the engine and replaced the oil pump. Oil pressure fixed....but the damage to the 5.0 was done, it had a slight knock after that. I believe they drove it like that for 7 years or so? Until the knock got worse and the oil leaks from their oil pump replacement got pretty nasty..they put another 5.0 in that truck from a 60K explorer.......that truck changed hands from one stepson to the other, bought it for his wife. That truck is still sitting outside RIGHT NOW, although the engine in that picture is long gone.... The explorer in question now is 4x4, is custom from bumper to bumper even has green monstaliner (it was burgundy) and James's wife drives it daily.
Funny what google brings up when you have been posting explorer 5.0 pictures for 20+ years now.....
So yeah I will never install another engine without removing the oil pan and checking the oil pump and oil pump drive. If I had just removed the cam sensor and oil pan I would have seen the oil pump drive shaft snapped in two......but then that explorer would have been long gone by now, instead it has hauled my two grand kids home from the hospital, received a 60K mile drivetrain along with a 4x4 conversion, custom interior, paint and even a junk yard set of TMH......that explorer taught me a valuable lesson and has served this family very well for the last 10+ years....
